Simply Charlotte Mason Curriculum

Delightful Reading is a leveled phonics curriculum that focuses on games and activities as it takes a child from learning and practicing beginning letters and sounds to reading chapters. Level 1 is low-key and teaches letters and sounds. Level 2 begins after the child knows most letters and sounds and guides students into phonics to learn basic words. Level 3 moves students into sentences, paragraphs, and chapters. Each Kit includes the Teacher Guide and the materials needed for one student. Additional Learner Packs are available for each additional student.

Using Language Well is a teacher- and student-involved, step-by-step course where students learn from writing samples to strengthen their spelling, narration, and dictation skills. Twice weekly, students will follow steps in the consumable student book and end the lesson with dictation led by the teacher. Book 1 focuses on beginning mechanics, transcription, and spelling. Book 2 has students practice dictation and narration skills. Books 3 through 6 build sequentially on each other and dovetail nicely with a reading/literature program of your choice. Book 7 then focuses on punctuation and sentence writing and is used over 2 years in high school.

The Art of Composition is a teacher- and student-involved, step-by-step writing course. These high school courses transition students from writing narrations to writing essays, researching, practicing some creative writing, and preparing for college-prep composition. This course requires students to write 4-5 narrations weekly based on readings from their other courses (such as history, language arts, etc.). These narrations will serve as the “rough drafts” for their weekly composition assignments. Each level assigns one weekly revision, collecting quotations in a commonplace book, and additional assignments as needed.

The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Series aligns with the writings of Charlotte Mason and presents math logically with interactive hands-on lessons. The key component for each grade is a hardcover text written in a conversational tone. Parents will guide students through short, daily lessons. Mental math and practical application of math skills are strongly emphasized; students often answer questions orally. The required manipulatives are simple household items in Arithmetic plus measurement tools in Geometry. All levels recommend gridded notebooks. Concentrated lessons are presented sequentially, often with a small amount of daily review. Grades 5 and 6 combine four days of arithmetic (emphasizing fractions, decimals, and percents) with a fifth day of real-life geometry. Pre-Algebra for grade 7-8 offers a bridge between arithmetic and algebra studies.

Your Business Math is a “living math” curriculum that guides students to practically apply basic vital math skills such as decimals/percentages and basic accounting principles. As students “run” a themed store, they learn how to figure sales tax, pay bills, handle unexpected surprises, and more. The Student Book contains conversational lessons and worksheets. The Teacher Guide provides a “how to use” section, teaching tips, worksheet answers, additional practice pages, and more. The schedule adapts for 14, 26, or 36 weeks.

Picture Study Portfolios offer simple art appreciation that the whole family can enjoy. Each portfolio contains 8 full-color pictures by the chosen artist, a living biography of the artist to read aloud, step-by-step instructions for picture study, discussion ideas, inspiration from Charlotte Mason, and more. As an enrichment activity, each portfolio will take 6 weeks to complete, as you have the freedom to choose your favorite 6 of the 8. One picture is studied each week and will take 15-20 minutes. Study the artwork, describe it, narrate, become familiar with the artists’ styles and themes.
