There are so many great board game experiences available for teenagers and so many games that come well recommended. There are seven years in the span of teenage life (ages 13-19), so many different types of games, and a wide range of difficulty levels that range from light to heavy—with medium-light, medium, and medium-heavy in between that work well for ages 12+ and 14+. Before recommending games for a person in this age group, I might ask whether they have grown up with games, and, if so, what some of their favorites are or what the most difficult game they enjoyed was. I might also ask what some of their general interests or hobbies are, particularly if they have not really played much other than party games or board games like Monopoly, Clue, or Parcheesi.
For now, I am focusing on those in the teenage group who have had minimal board game experiences or only a few lighter game experiences but are curious and enthused about exploring new ones with just a bit more complexity. These are games that I would rate as light or medium-light in difficulty and that I have personally played. I hope this helps some future game enthusiasts, or their parents, choose great game gifts for themselves and/or the teenager(s) in their life.
