With this Using Language Well Book 2 course, students will be introduced to dictation skills. English concepts taught will include abbreviations, dialogue, homonyms, identifying paragraphs and stanzas, plural possessives, capitalization of proper names, titles, initials and prefixes. In an early lesson on The Shepherd’s Song by John Bunyan, for example, students are asked how they would write the possessive form if the song belongs to more than the shepherd. Then, they are asked to add the correct ending punctuation to 5 different sentences, including question marks, exclamations, and periods. Spelling for this lesson asks the students to check the poem and identify which words they aren’t sure they can spell. To complete the lesson, the parent dictates the poem, one stanza at a time. As teacher, you have the choice as to how much of the passage to assign and how many sentences to dictate. Grammar concepts such as action and “to be” verbs are taught, along with proper and common nouns, predicates, and subjects. Writing Point sections periodically provide guidance to help the student develop strong narration skills. For examples of lessons, see the Student Book samples and description. Purchase the two components together in a convenient bundle. Uses ESV (2001) Scripture, from primarily Ecclesiastes and the Psalms. 160 pgs, spiral-bound, softcover. ~ Ruth

Using Language Well Level 2 allows you as parent to customize spelling, writing, and grammar lessons. Each lesson should take 10-15 minutes, and will be mostly independent. Parents will give guidance in the spelling portion. This level encourages a guided-discovery approach: encouraging students to look for language patterns. Students will work on synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, complex alphabetizing, and more. Nouns and verbs are introduced. Students will learn how to study unfamiliar words by working on essential skills, then moving toward growth and the end goal of a strong speller. At this level, students will move from mental composition to some written narrations, aiming at one written narration per week. Rubrics will help you carefully target corrections. Directions are in the student book; answers and teaching aids are in the teacher book. A placement test is available to ensure you’re at the right level.
