Description

This next step after Shiller Math Level I focuses on approximately grade 4 and above math skills using a Montessori teaching methodology. If you’re unsure about your student’s placement, the publisher has placement testing available for a fee. Kit II naturally progresses from Books 1-3 used in ShillerMath I Kit, covering math skills from grade 4 through approximately grade 8, teaching multiple years’ worth of skills incrementally using three different spiral-bound texts. Each of the included books provides four review tests to help ensure mastery.

To give you a sense of the concepts taught, the 144 lessons in Book 4 start with a review of multiplication and division practice and then move into the Law of Commutativity. Students will work on measurement and money, and then move on to geometry concepts, notation, percentages, order of operations, mathematical logic, plotting, distributive law, converting measurements, decimals, and “long multiplication.” Book 5 (152 lessons) starts with factoring, working with larger numbers, problem solving and mental math, “long division,” bar charts, probability, graphing distance over time, commutative law, associate law, geometry concepts, number theory, compass directions, Venn diagrams, averages, and long division with 2-digit divisors. The 165 lessons in Book 6 begin with geometric concepts, including quadrilaterals and symmetry; area; equation commutativity and simultaneous equations; problem-solving strategies; perimeter; negative numbers; verbal problems; graphing factors, points, and curves; permutations; proofs; common divisors; circumference; decimals; solving for unknowns; linear algebra; powers and exponents; Pythagorean theorem; and end with square roots. Upon completing these three books, the publisher states that the student should be ready to pursue upper-level math concepts. For high school level math courses, we recommend taking the placement tests of the program you select.

Contents include Lesson Books 4-6 with review tests; all needed manipulatives; lifetime digital access to PDFs of student consumable pages; Parent Guide; Kit II audio CD; 3-ring binder; division table pad, degreed circle pad, and graph worksheet pad; tracking sheets and manipulatives.

Category Description for ShillerMath Kits (1 -2)

This Montessori math program was designed specifically for the home school. Structured as a two-stage math program with unique manipulatives, the program’s scripted lessons equip parents in conveying math concepts using the unique methodology. Concepts are taught spirally while also building upon each other. Each lesson starts by highlighting the lesson objective, the manipulatives needed, and the learning style addressed. The teacher guidance is easy to follow, and students respond by doing or answering. A multitude of learning styles are utilized while building on previously learned skills. Review Tests provide periodic evaluation.

There are two kit levels (I and II) available that span skills from PK up through grade 8. However, for Level I, two choices are available. Both versions of Kit I are intended for children ages 4-8 and are complete math programs for up to 5 years of instruction, depending on the student’s learning pace. Both Level I options include Lesson Books I, II, and III, but the number of included manipulatives varies. Kit 1 Basic includes the Lesson Books I, II, and III and the Parent Guide (a “get you started” tool), but only includes the more difficult-to-find manipulatives. Kit I also includes Lesson Books I, II, and III and the Parent Guide, but adds in all the needed manipulatives. See each kit description for specific details. Both kits include directions to obtain lifetime PDF access to print out consumable student worksheets and review test worksheets.

Level II retains the open-and-go approach, teaching math skills equivalent to grades 4 through 8, including pre-algebra. As students progress, they may need you as the instructor to come alongside them, guiding their learning and helping out when needed. This kit also includes lifetime PDF access to consumable student worksheets and review test worksheets.
