We Pick, You Pick

We Pick, You Pick is a helpful, parent-friendly way to build a complete homeschool curriculum with expert support. Rainbow Resource Center’s experienced Curriculum Consultants—familiar with over 1,200 publishers and more than 50,000 products—do the heavy lifting on two core subjects so you can focus on the rest.

How it works

Step 1

We Pick the Math and English Language Arts (ELA) for you. Our consultants have carefully selected grade-appropriate, secular/neutral programs that align with California Standards (and work well for many homeschool families nationwide) for Kindergarten through Grade 8. For each grade level, we provide three tailored options designed for different learning styles and paces:

  1. Striving learners: gentle, supportive programs that build confidence and fill gaps without overwhelming the student.
  2. On-target learners: balanced, straightforward materials that keep students moving at grade level.
  3. Accelerated learners: challenging, enriched options that allow advanced students to stretch further.

These tracks are consistent from year to year, so a child can stay on the same path (striving, on-target, or accelerated) as they progress through the grades.

Step 2

You Pick everything else. Once your math and ELA are decided, take a deep breath and consider other subjects for your homeschool year. Science and Social Studies round out the 4 core subjects, and this is where you decide how to proceed. Explore our suggestions and see what inspires you as a homeschooling parent. Feel confident that the science options meet Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the social studies align to California’s grade level standards.

Step 1: We Pick the Math & ELA

For the Striving Student

Striving Students are working at grade level but may need some accommodation within the lesson. This could be a child showing signs of ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, dysgraphia, auditory processing, or other diagnosis. It could also be an undiagnosed child who benefits from interactive instruction, eye contact, discussions, and generally requires extra time for reading aloud, comprehension, or handwriting. Math instruction with written practice and review is helpful.

For the On-Target Student

On-Target Students are comfortable with grade-level expectations. They generally like a mix of parent/teacher interaction and working on their own. They ask good questions to improve their understanding. These students benefit from encouragement to follow a spark of interest and sharing what they learn. Math instruction can have some features of a mastery and spiral approach, with both focused lessons and review with written practice.

For the Accelerated Learner

Accelerated Learners are those children who learn and retain easily. Instruction will be explicit at some times and truncated at other times. They make connections between new information and existing knowledge automatically and may need only casual review. That said, they generally need help with time management, and it can be a challenge to find age-appropriate literature. Because parents are required to use grade-level curriculum, we selected rich literature and instruction that allows these children to soar.

Step 2: You Pick the Science, Social Studies, and Extras

Science & Social Studies

Science & Social Studies are areas where you might choose an alternative to traditional parent/student instruction to add variety and novelty to your learning. You could find an engaging online option, a subscription box, a co-op or other live class setting, or maybe you find a way to combine your children on a study topic that meets the required standards set by your organization. We are leaving this up to you, but also, we wanted to share some options we carry that meet the need.

Enrichment

Enrichment encompasses those subject areas outside of the core 4. We chose to include art, music, American Sign Language (ASL), logic, math games, ELA games, STEM, California history, social-emotional learning, and sensory materials such as games or hands-on items. The suggestions encourage children to find an interest to pursue and provide a new setting where they must apply what they have learned. Items are age appropriate and there are no repeats throughout the grade levels. It’s the fun stuff that adds depth to your school day.

Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology provides options to meet a specific need in your child’s learning. These are tools that make learning easier and more pleasant by addressing sensory issues and executive functioning. Both fine and gross motor skills are represented. You will find more color options on our website for many of the items. These are less by grade level and more by functionality.

Do you want us to choose all 4 core subjects?

If you'd rather we select all four core subjects for you, consider our Secular Starter Packages (available for grades K–8). These packages provide a complete year-long curriculum covering all four main subjects: math, English language arts (ELA), science, and social studies.

However, unlike our We Pick, You Pick option, Starter Packages are not designed for multi-year progression (for example, you don’t automatically move from grade 3 to grade 4 to grade 5 in the Starter Packages). Instead, their main purpose is to help brand-new homeschooling parents:

  • get oriented to homeschooling,
  • try out a variety of programs and teaching styles,
  • observe and assess how their child learns best, and
  • discover their own preferences as a homeschooling parent.
By the end of the school year, having used a Starter Package, you’ll have much clearer insight into what works for your family. You can then confidently choose or customize future curriculum based on that experience.
