Science, social studies, math, and English Language Arts (ELA) make up the four core subject areas that are typically required in most states. You may decide to use our math and ELA recommendations and decide to utilize a different type of class or curriculum for science or social studies. Parents need to spend their time wisely and maximize time spent on direct instruction. Often, math and ELA are areas that benefit most from higher parent/student interaction. For social studies and science, you may get more creative and try a local class, an online class, or take a unit study approach.
If you are looking for social studies and science curricula that meet California content standards, we have provided several recommendations below. It is always a good idea to ask your specific charter school if these are also acceptable to your charter school guidelines. SavvasHomeschool science and social studies courses available for grades K-8 include myWorld Social Studies and Elevate Science. These also include Savvas Realize, which contains digital tools and resources for both teachers and students. For kindergarten, we suggest using Elevate Science and myWorld Social Studies, both featuring appealing, full-color student worktexts. All teacher support materials are available digitally for one full year via the Savvas Realize platform. Each day’s worktext page includes a short reading passage followed by questions to answer, with a convenient answer key printed at the back for easy use. These programs work well as a core framework—you can easily supplement with extra hands-on activities, books, or projects to enrich the experience.
Elevate Science and myWorld Social Studies provide engaging, colorful student worktexts for first grade with all the accompanying teacher resources accessible online for one year through Savvas Realize. Additional worksheets and assessments are also hosted digitally. Or, if you prefer your curriculum resources in print, consider Discover! Science or Discover! Social Studies, which offer worktext-based learning for each semester. The Instructor Guide supplies clear lesson plans and complete answer keys, while the separate Assessment Book simplifies testing and progress tracking.
For second grade, Elevate Science and myWorld Social Studies continue to be strong options with their appealing, full-color student worktexts.
