I love board games any time of the year but as Summer approaches, I am thinking about games that have a summer “vibe” and/or travel well for trips to the beach, picnics, camping or wherever else summer takes you! Here are three fabulous games that I have played and chosen that remind me of summer or that I have packed and played away from home. We also have a terrific set of playing cards that deliver exceptional durability no matter where your play takes you.
Skull King
Ages 8+
Nothing says summer like sailing ships, pirates and action-packed card games that play well with a group! This is a trick-taking game in which players try to predict how many bids they will win in each of ten rounds. Bid correctly, to earn points and lose points for wrong bids. Special cards such as pirates, mermaids and the Skull King add to the action. With two different levels of play and scoring as well as optional cards for special awards and points, this game will become a favorite! Plays with 2-8 people in 30-45 minutes.
Campsite
Ages 8+
This is a quick summer themed, tile laying game for 2-6 gamers, in which players take turns placing a terrain card that depicts two of six different terrains each turn and then placing one of seven different tent tiles trying to match their tent to as many of the same adjacent terrain types as possible. Total up points at the end of each of three rounds and the player with the most points wins. 30-40 minute game time.
Azul Summer Pavilion
Ages 8+
This beautifully designed tile laying game with colorful star shaped frescos helps players develop strategic planning skills. Not only does it have a summer theme but also the pieces are heavy enough to resist potential winds that can accompany outdoor play. Compete with two to four people to obtain the best resources available while meeting pattern and number goals to gain the most points over six rounds. Observe other player’s actions to grab tiles that might thwart their plans! This is a fun strategy game with challenge and a 30–45-minute game time.
Dura Deck Playing Cards
Ages 8+
If you have always wanted a durable, waterproof and tear proof deck of playing cards these are perfect! You can play them on a boat. You can throw them in a moat. Spill on them and wipe them dry. Cannot ruin them if you try! These are great cards for summertime and year-round play!
