Description

With this Using Language Well teacher book, you’ll have the necessary resources to guide your student to a deeper level of using punctuation, grammar, and English skills (such as dictionary and thesaurus use). Students learn about antonyms, synonyms, and homonyms. They’ll use dashes and parentheses properly. They’ll also learn how to use simple subjects and predicates, along with prepositional phrases used as modifiers. For writing assignments, multiple rubrics will help carefully target correction. In spelling, you’ll guide your student at one of three different levels (get the essentials, encourage steady growth, or challenge a natural speller). Narrations will continue at two per week. Dictations will require up to the whole passage provided (typically 3-4 sentences). Students will continue refining their narration skills throughout the year. Writing rubrics offer a choice of levels: one for beginning or progressing writers (with options for both the student and the parent to evaluate). Both the teacher and the student book are required for this course. Answers and teaching aids are in the teacher book; directions are in the student book. A convenient bundle combines these two components together. 180 pages, nonconsumable, spiral-bound, softcover. ~ Ruth

Category Description for Using Language Well Book 4

This level of Using Language Well is designed as a crucial bridge from material taught in Level 3 and into those taught in Level 5. Building upon the parts of speech introduced in Level 3, Level 4 continues with compound verbs, prepositional phrases, interjections, antecedents, simple subjects, and predicates. If your student needs a refresher on beginning concepts of parts of speech, consider starting in Level 3. A placement test is available for further guidance. This level also introduces point of view (first-, second- and third-person narration). Spelling continues to be pulled from literary passages and you can tailor these to your student based on their need (according to three different levels). At this level, students will be required to complete two written narrations weekly and complete dictations of 3 or 4 sentences. These can be taken from passages your student is reading in other subjects. Rubrics help target correction and instruction more carefully. The Student and Teacher books are necessary and are available either individually or in a convenient bundle. Directions are in the student book; answers and teaching aids are in the teacher book. See individual component descriptions for sample pages and more specific information. ~ Ruth
