In this level of Using Language Well 2nd edition, students will work more independently while continuing the learning method of guided-discovery. Students will learn figures of speech, similes, metaphors, and personification. This text includes a grammar points journal to remind students of key concepts. Students will be introduced to poetry analysis and various rhyme schemes. Lessons begin with shorter passages such as this quotation pulled from Les Miserables: “Be it said in passing, that success is a very hideous thing. Its false resemblance to merit deceives men.” Very quickly, however, students will dive into deeper concepts and longer passages. This level ends with studying a three-paragraph excerpt from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. What a time to encourage outside reading of the book itself! The parent will guide in the spelling portions and will check grading with the Teacher Book. Using the student consumable book, the student is expected to be able to complete dictations of up to one paragraph in length and three narrations weekly. Spelling lessons are included within the prepared dictation. Student book is reproducible for students in immediate household. Purchase both needed components in a convenient bundle. Consumable, spiral-bound, 196 pgs, softcover. ~ Ruth

Description
Charlotte Mason language arts lessons that guide your student in learning English usage, grammar, and spelling with passages from great literature. (Grade 6)
Consumable student book. The parent will need Using Language Well, Book 4, Teacher Guide. Additional students will each need one student book.
This level of Using Language Well is designed as a crucial bridge from material taught in Level 3 and into those taught in Level 5. Building upon the parts of speech introduced in Level 3, Level 4 continues with compound verbs, prepositional phrases, interjections, antecedents, simple subjects, and predicates. If your student needs a refresher on beginning concepts of parts of speech, consider starting in Level 3. A placement test is available for further guidance. This level also introduces point of view (first-, second- and third-person narration). Spelling continues to be pulled from literary passages and you can tailor these to your student based on their need (according to three different levels). At this level, students will be required to complete two written narrations weekly and complete dictations of 3 or 4 sentences. These can be taken from passages your student is reading in other subjects. Rubrics help target correction and instruction more carefully. The Student and Teacher books are necessary and are available either individually or in a convenient bundle. Directions are in the student book; answers and teaching aids are in the teacher book. See individual component descriptions for sample pages and more specific information. ~ Ruth
