Publisher's Description of Ancient History-Based Writing Lessons Teacher/StudentCombo Sixth Edition

Experience the adventures of the ancient world! This theme-based writing curriculum exposes students to the ancient world through cultural literature and the study of famous places and events while they learn to write with the Structure and Style®️ writing method. Offering a full year of instruction for students in grades 6-8, these lessons cover all nine IEW Units. Literature suggestions and access to vocabulary cards, Simplified Source Texts, Advanced Additions and other helpful PDF downloads are included.

These lessons are designed to be used by an instructor who has been through the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style seminar, either live or on video.

Perfect for homeschoolers, homeschool co-ops, tutors, and hybrid schools, this theme-based writing curriculum supports parents and teachers in teaching writing to middle school students (grades 6-8).

This resource equips students to focus on Ancient History while applying the IEW® writing method. This 6th edition of Ancient History-Based Writing Lessons features 30 lessons for grades 4-7. This course applies the unique writing method taught in Teaching Writing Structure and Style. Information on applying MLA format in essays is also provided.

Students will read source texts on topics from ancient history: the wonders of the ancient world, Greek Myths, Roman engineering, the people of ancient Asia, and much more. The course also provides weekly vocabulary words (via free downloadable cards) as well as literature suggestions. To build a complete language arts, add literary analysis to the recommended choices—or add your own. Also consider what additional skills may be needed to meet your student’s needs. Appendix IV offers picture book options if you want to include younger students on this theme: Cleopatra or The Gilgamesh Trilogy.  Options for grades 4-7 or 6-8 include books like A Place in the Sun; The Secrets of Vesuvius; Who Was (Alexander the Great; Julius Caesar; and King Tut). Suggested for Grades 5-8 are Detectives in Togas and the Mystery of the Roman Ransom. For grades 6-8, suggestions include The Bronze Bow; The Golden Goblet; and Mara, Daughter of the Nile.

Components of this edition are not compatible with any previous edition. A blue sheet at the front of the Student Book and the Teacher Manual describe how to access online resources including the vocabulary cards, checklists, exemplars, and more. The Student Book is consumable but is reproducible (for single family purchasers).

The Teacher Book provides reduced copies of student pages (with answers) and teaching suggestions provided in the margins. It's assumed that Teachers have taken and have access to IEW's Teaching Writing Structure and Style®.
