Your student is in those middle school years, and the
grammar warning lights are going off! What can you do? Rules of the Game
from EPS is a great student worktext that is written directly to the student
for independent grammar instruction. Brief instruction is provided throughout
the many practice questions, reflection exercises, and writing practice. The
idea is that students will notice and learn the patterns found within grammar
and will recreate this process in their own writing. Answers are found in the Teacher’s
Key through reduced student pages with written answers. There is no teacher
instruction, as everything is written directly to the student. The answer key
makes a great component for students to check and grade their own work for yet
another touch point with the lesson and grammar concepts. This is an effective
program to supplement, diagnose, or evaluate a student’s grammar understanding
as well as teach basic grammar concepts.
Lessons do build on each other throughout each book. Book 1 is an
introduction to grammar concepts—great for those students who may not have had
a formal grammar program up to this point. Book 2 and Book 3 include review
lessons before jumping into new material and concluding with Comprehensive
Exercises. Other exercises include labeling and identifying parts of grammar,
finding patterns in sentences, writing sentences, choosing effective modifiers,
and combining sentences correctly. This program is versatile and flexible in
nature. Work from cover to cover for
systematic and overall grammar coverage or skip around and target grammar
concepts as needed. ~Rebecca
