Publisher's Description of Discover Science: Weather

One of the most easily observed yet difficult topics to explain to children is weather. Discover Science: Weather by Caroline Harris introduces young readers to the atmospheric world around them, from sun and wind to climate and temperature. Readers can look at snowflakes in amazing detail, discover the water cycle, learn how rain forms in clouds, explore renewable energy, and take a first look at the devastating effects of pollution and extreme weather. With key vocabulary defined in the glossary, and hands-on projects at the end, this is the perfect introduction to this core science topic.

Make science accessible with this essential series that will capture children's imagination while laying the foundation for future learning. With clear, simple language and a compelling design, Discover Science gives young readers the answers to fundamental questions about animal homes, birds, light and sound, materials and more.

Category Description for Sassafras Science

Sassafras Science is a fun, Charlotte Mason-inspired, hands-on science program that follows the Sassafras Twins on exciting around-the-world adventures with their eccentric Uncle Cecil and his lab assistant, a prairie dog named President Lincoln. Through an engaging story, children discover that science is anything but boring!

This inquiry-based curriculum combines living books, real experiments, notebooking, copywork, and discussion to help students develop a love for science while building strong observation and thinking skills.

How It Works

Each semester-long Adventure requires three core components:

  • Reader: The heart of the program. A lively story that carries the science lessons as the twins travel and explore.
  • Guide: Provides lesson plans, chapter summaries, discussion questions, vocabulary, encyclopedia and library book suggestions, experiment instructions, and additional activities.
  • Scidat Logbook: A consumable student notebook where children record observations, color maps, draw illustrations, complete copywork/dictation, and document experiments and projects.

The Scidat Logbook is not reproducible, so you’ll need one per child. A moderate amount of writing is involved, making this program slightly more intensive than some other Charlotte Mason-style science curricula. Younger children may need parental help or can “buddy up” with an older sibling.

Available Adventures

Each volume covers one major area of science for approximately one semester. The books are designed to be completed in order for the best story experience, but each begins with a quick review so you can start mid-series if needed.

Sassafras Science is an excellent choice for families who want living-books science that is engaging, memorable, and gently rigorous, making it perfect for multi-age learning and fostering a genuine love for science.
