This is the first in an upcoming series for students wanting to improve their skills in spelling, reading practice/grammar, and writing practice. If you’re using Master Books Language Arts Level 2, this supplement will correlate nicely. If you need to supplement another current language arts program, this supplement will work as a nice companion. This consumable text is organized into 3 categories: Spelling, Grammar/Reading, and Writing, with a total of 36 lessons in each subject. Each section ends with the correlating answer key. You have the freedom to use lessons as needed. Since these lessons correlate with the Master Books Level 2 lessons, one option is to add in a lesson from each of the 3 subjects and correlate with each week of your school year. Alternatively, your student could complete 3 lessons weekly during a school break or semester (about 12 weeks’ worth) to keep key concepts refined. You could also condense this course into 4-5 weeks. Pick and choose assignments as your student needs.
The Spelling Practice section progresses phonetically: short vowel words first and then “long” vowels (like cave and pray), progressing to consonant and vowel blends, and finally, r-controlled and consonant blend words. Students engage with unique exercises including word shape spelling (selecting the correct word to fill in the appropriate square or rectangle shapes). For a second activity, Spelling with Color, students will fill in the consonants and vowels using their favorite colored pencils (not provided).
The Grammar and Reading section provides stories that will help students practice their spelling words from section 1 so they’re engaging with this vocabulary in multiple ways. “Word Play” activities include filling in blanks (Mad Libs® style) and also reading aloud and responding to short assignments.
The last section is Writing Practice. Students will use the introduced spelling words to write sentences as directed. Writing spaces are ¾ inch with a dotted middle line. The second half of each of these lessons provides a Journal It! Section, which encourages students to write short responses on provided lines. For example, “What is today’s date?” (in full written form); “use nouns to write a list of three things you are thankful for.”
Answers are provided at the end of each section; no additional teacher text is needed. Not reproducible, 243 perforated pgs, three-hole-punched, sc. ~ Ruth
