Code Breakers Grooved Reusable Sound Cards are not your ordinary mundane flashcards. Their standout feature is the grooved letters that kids can trace with a magic erasable pen! Using a spy theme, kids embark on a mission to crack open the code to the English language. Each card combines tactile tracing, multisensory practice, and a reusable writing surface, giving children a hands‑on way to strengthen phonics and spelling skills—without relying on boring workbook pages! The 180 Sound Cards come in a handy storage box with dividers, 3 erasable pens with refills, a mirror, and access to digital resources.
One side of each card has a letter(s) and a colorful illustration that represents the sound of the letter(s). On the tactile side, students encounter the sound of the phoneme or phonics/spelling rule, carved (grooved) letters that correspond to the illustration on the front, grooved phonemic markings and blending bars that guide learners as they connect sounds, and a set of extra example words that reinforce the same pattern. Children can trace the grooved letters with their fingers or use the erasable pen. A red dot marks the starting point on every grooved letter, guiding students as they form the shape. The cards are designed so kids see the letter, feel its shape, and say the sound aloud. The mirror helps them observe how their mouth moves as they pronounce each sound.
Early learners can start on the front of each card to build letter recognition and practice letter sounds. When they’re ready, they can move to the tactile side, where they feel the grooved letters and phonemic markings to sound out words. The grooved blending bar beneath each word helps them feel the progression of sounds as they read. Older learners can also use the reusable pens to write in the grooved letters on the cards while sounding them out.
The reference cards in the box guide you step‑by‑step through the card progression, explain each phonemic marking, and provide a QR code for quick access to the complete scope and sequence and digital library. The twenty-page printable scope & sequence outlines the recommended teaching order. For additional support, the digital library includes a printable word list, printable workbooks and sound cards, and over 60 teacher-support videos that clearly demonstrate how to teach phonics and spelling concepts. You can also create a free account to access the AI companion, Groovie, who provides useful information about teaching reading, creates individual lesson plans, offers interactive blending practice and games, and gives access to engaging decodable e-books (that can also be read aloud).
If you want even more support and hands-on material, the Sound Cards pair perfectly with the Code Breakers Elementary Grooved Workbooks. The Sound Cards are color-coded to match each workbook. The top-bound spiral, reusable workbooks (mission manuals) allow pages to flip from top to bottom. The top portion includes the “code” or phonics/spelling rule and the bottom provides practice. Students listen to parents reading and teaching the code, look at the visual examples, and feel and write in the grooved letters. The magic pens erase in about 20 minutes or wipe off instantly. Additional games in the workbooks also make the program even more multisensory and provide a more complete phonics, spelling, and handwriting experience. ~ Gina
