Description

The Consumer Math Student Book includes all the readings for each lesson, as well as a Reference Section in the back with tax forms, measurement charts, and geometric shape formulas.

I really appreciate the “Keeping Perspective” of each lesson. This blurb is similar to the short advice a parent might share with a child when he says, “But remember….”  For example, when the lesson teaches how to find the unit price to spend less on groceries, “Keeping Perspective” adds why someone may choose to buy organic produce even though it is more expensive.

Also, several lessons include a “Skill Review” or “Skill Sharpening” section, where previous math concepts are explained and students can practice that skill. (How do I estimate what 20% off is in my head?)

If your student would benefit from video instruction, MasterBooks does sell a self-paced, online course for Consumer Math through their website.  ~Tara

Publisher's Description of Consumer Math Student Book

Equip for Life’s Real Math Challenges!

Throughout your life, you’re going to face a myriad of decisions, from how to spend money you’re given for your birthday to which career, car, or house to choose. Consumer Math encompasses the big picture of these tasks using basic math skills to teach you how to:

  • Create a budget
  • Find the best deal on purchases
  • Calculate interest on loan investments
  • Determine how much money you need to set aside for taxes
  • And much more

Using the equation income = giving + saving + spending, you will learn to apportion the money you make in a way that provides for your needs while adhering to biblical principles concerning tithing and being generous.

Learn to do math in your head in order to quickly estimate costs, and discover the advantages of spreadsheets. Plus read case studies of businessmen and women and see what led to their success.

The purpose of this course is not to tell you what to do with your money but to help you think through the choices you will need to make:

  • Should you rent or buy a house?
  • Go into debt or wait until you have the money in hand?
  • What about credit cards?

You will love the practicality that takes math from being abstract to being useful in your daily life.

Category Description for Consumer Math from Master Books

From the same author as MasterBooks’ Mathematical Reasoning course, this Consumer Math course covers a wide array of finance-related topics and “adulting” skills that every high schooler should know.  Each lesson includes explanations about the topic, along with examples, key terms, sample calculations, illustrations, and helpful charts, all in clear, plain language.  After finishing this course, your student will be able to apply basic math skills to a variety of situations they will encounter as an adult. Throughout this curriculum, a biblical worldview is presented: teaching stewardship, the danger of debt, honesty in taxes, the value of saving, and being grateful for the resources God has given. Help your student prepare for all the seemingly complicated terms and real-life challenges that they will face as an adult with this new program. Parents will enjoy the opportunity to brush up on their own financial knowledge and lead by example as they evaluate their own household budgets and finances!  ~Tara
