Description

This course pulls from various international writers (primarily western Europe and North America), and features short story, poetry, biography, autobiography, primary sources and nonfiction, drama, and the novel. Each of the 6 units focuses on specific reading skills such as evaluating narrative writing, understanding cause and effect, distinguishing fact from opinion, and the elements of the novel. Authors such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, Robert Frost, and Thomas Hardy are added to the A Tale of Two Cities novel by Charles Dickens. Writings are organized by themes, including those of perseverance, remorse, irony, and compassion. Difficult subjects are not ignored, including the Auschwitz trials, the consequences of war, or apartheid. Composition assignments include narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, and literary analysis. The end of the text is filled with writing handbooks of comprehension and writing skills and a manual of style, grammar, usage, and mechanics which provides help but does not include writing instruction. The Teacher’s text is necessary. 1 credit course. ©2000, Nonconsumable, 888 pgs, sewn bindings, hc. ~ Ruth
