Description

This updated set of phonics books is visually appealing, with distinctive changes from the previous edition (item 029223) while staying very true to the unique teaching methodology and concepts used in Jolly Phonics. Each book’s cover identifies the sounds introduced and taught…typically 6-7 apiece. This set can be used in conjunction with the Jolly Phonics Workbooks or the Activity Books. Unique updates include an artistic change which utilizes more of the full page. There are also two changes that will affect instruction, I think, in a positive way. First, children will now trace in the grooved letter by starting at the single dot, following a single line, and ending at a circle. Secondly, at the bottom right of each page are 5 instructional talking points and visual cues. The 4th of these steps will always include the phonetic pronunciation for the sound, a list of all words on these pages which contain that sound, and the phoneme indicated in bold font.

While you can use these wonderful books as a separate teaching tool or as a supplement to another phonics program, be aware that the sounds are introduced in a unique order and students will learn to differentiate phonemes in unique ways. Book 1 introduces the letters s, a, t, i, p, and n. Book 2 teaches c, k, e, h, r, m, and d. Book 3 covers g, o, u, l, f, and b. Book 4 moves into dipthongs: ai, j, oa, ie, ee, and or. Book 5 covers z, w, ng, v, and oo (distinguishing between the 2 sounds created by these letters). Instruction moves in Book 6 to two tricky letters (y and x) and the digraphs ch, sh, and th (voiced and unvoiced). The final Book 7 ends this series with challenging diphthongs: qu, ou, oi, ue, er, and ar. ~ Ruth

Publisher's Description of Finger Phonics Set of Books 1-7 (updated)

The Finger Phonics books introduce young children to all of the letter sounds, not just the alphabet. The teaching in these books is multisensory. Each letter sound is introduced with an action and a large cut-out letter, which helps little fingers to feel the correct formation. Fun activities at the end of each book help children to use their new letter- sound knowledge and begin to develop their reading and writing skills.

These refreshed editions are the same as previous editions in terms of number of pages, pagination and core content, but have been enhanced with:

  • New cover designs, color-coded to match each group of letter sounds across other Jolly Phonics resources
  • Fresh and new full-page illustrations for each page
  • New-style, easy-to-follow letter formation guides
  • Information panels showing how to use each page
  • Additional items within each picture to tie in with the vocabulary taught in Jolly English
  • Updated activities at the end of each book to align with other Jolly Phonics resources
Category Description for Jolly Phonics K4 (ages 4+)

In Jolly Phonics K4, children use multisensory methods such as catchy songs, delightful stories, and fun actions to learn the 42 letter sounds, then move from single sounds to blended letter sounds. Sounds are taught first (before letter names) and in a specific order that allows children to start reading as soon as possible. Resources used at this level include revised Finger Phonics Readers (with new illustrations and information panels for parents), Phonics Workbooks, Decodable Readers, Flashcards, Phonics Cards, and Handwriting Books. These resources provide a gradual way to build a great foundation for learning to read and learning proper letter formation. You can use the materials for this age as a precursor to Jolly Phonics K5 or another phonics program. Because of the spiral nature of Jolly Learning products, children do not need to complete the K4 program before moving to Jolly Phonics or Jolly Literacy. There is no teacher’s book at this level; although, guidance is provided within the workbooks and readers.
