People & Place for Layers of Learning (Year Four)

Layers of Learning People and Place is a one-year family-style geography program that also introduces government and economics. Divided into nine units, there are activities and book suggestions for three age levels: 6-9 years, 10-13 years, and 14-18 years. Activities vary and include mapping and labeling exercises, making an African boubou, constructing dioramas, and more. Like other Layers of Learning courses, suggested activities and corresponding books are abundant, giving parents the opportunity to pick and choose the best option for their family. In the government unit, families learn the purpose of government, types of government, leaders/leadership, citizenship and patriotism, and more. The Economics unit begins with an overview of economic principles before launching into personal finance. The course concludes with a “My Country” study, which encourages children to learn about their homeland—its geography, culture, pastimes, holidays, landmarks, and leaders. The out-of-print DK Geography of the World is scheduled in the course. You may find this resource in the used marketspace or substitute a different quality children’s world geography book. Also scheduled in the course is the Writer’s Workshop and World’s Explorer’s Journal, both of which are optional resources used throughout the Layers of Learning four-year cycle. You will also need quality coloring pencils, art and craft supplies, and household items.
