Layers of Learning Modern World History is a one-year family-style history program. Offering lessons and activities for ages 6-18, this course is part of the Layers of Learning 4-year cyclic curriculum, but it can also be used as a stand-alone history curriculum. There are 9 units, each basically one month in length, although families are encouraged to take extra time if children are engaged in the topic and want to go deeper. Along with traditional history topics, students also learn about famous men and women throughout the time period. Where appropriate, a “content” warning is included for lessons, which allows parents to decide what is appropriate to be taught to their children. What I love about this program is the abundance of books and activities, which are divided into three age groups (6-9 years, 10-13 years, and 14-18 years). Parents can choose the activities that fit their families best. Numerous library and read-aloud books are suggested, and there are two history encyclopedias scheduled in the lessons at all three grade levels: Usborne World History Encyclopedia and the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, which is now out of print unfortunately. Any other quality children’s history encyclopedia will work fine; parents simply need to match the topical readings. Also referenced are the optional Book of Years Timeline and the Writer’s Workshop, both of which are used throughout the Layers of Learning four-year cycle. Additional household and/or art supplies are needed. This is an excellent option for homeschool families wanting to study history together. With the abundance of activities and supportive reading suggestions, there is something for everyone!

Modern World History is an activity-based program for students from age 6 to 18. It covers world history from about 1800 to the 21st century. The course books are for mentors to use as a scaffold and idea resource when planning reading, activities, discussions, and writing assignments. Each unit contains a library list of books to choose from followed by a series of lesson plans, which we call Exploration, to select among. Take an adventure together through history and geography with this interactive family approach to learning. Courses are divided into 9 units, with each unit taking about one month. This is flexible, as each unit offers teaching notes, library lists, activities, enrichment ideas, and carefully selected rabbit trails to go deeper into a topic. Families with learners of different ages will appreciate that within each unit, the activities and recommended reading are further divided into three grade levels: 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12, along with lesson activities and readings as a family.
Layers of Learning offers separate history and geography courses that can be used separately or in tandem. If new to cyclical history study, it is recommended that you begin with Ancient History (Year 1), although families who have completed an ancient history course could begin with Middle Ages (Year 2) or Colonial History (Year 3).
Geography begins with an overview in Year 1, People and Planet. Year 2 expands on this knowledge with Mapping Our World, and World Cultures are studied in Year 3.
