Layers of Learning Modern Arts is a one-year, family-style art curriculum that focuses on doing art while learning about artists, art styles and themes, and art movements. Divided into nine units, there are activities and book suggestions for ages 6-18. Children will make clay pinch pots as they study Latin American Art, paint seascapes as they study realism, create an abstract egg crash painting, make balloon animals, and so much more! Like the other Layers of Learning courses, there is an abundance of suggested activities and books for families to choose from! Several art reference books are scheduled in the lessons, including: The Arts: A Visual Encyclopedia, The Annotated Mona Lisa, and the out-of-print books: The Usborne Introduction to Art, The Story of Painting by Sister Wendy Beckett, and The Art Book by DK. These books may be found at your library or through the used marketplace. Other quality children’s art history books may be substituted easily. You will need to supply art paper and an artist sketchbook, various types of paints and markers, and other art and craft supplies. Supplies needed will vary depending on which projects you select. The suggested and referenced Layers of Learning Art Sketchbook is used throughout the Layers of Learning four-year cycle.
