Publisher's Description of Learning Language Arts Through Literature Gold - British Literature (4th Edition)
The 4th Edition Learning Language Arts Through Literature – The Gold Book – British Literature takes a deeper look at the birthplace of all English works. From Shakespeare to Tolkien, students will be introduced to great writers who have shaped and influenced the world that we know. They will be encouraged to reflect on what they read, guided by questions that are designed to deepen their understanding, and then be able to clearly state a position in written and oral responses. Written in a conversational style, the easy-to-follow format requires little or no preparation for the teacher and allows the student to work independently.

In The Gold Book – British Literature you’ll find:

Novel studies take an in-depth look at five well-known British Literature books. Students are challenged with thought-provoking questions, learn to interpret literature, explore characters, literary analysis and more.

Poetry study includes the poetry of notable British literature authors and poets from the Romantic and Victorian periods and the Modern Age. Included among the British Literature classics such as Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats, Tennyson, Arnold, Hopkins, Eliot, Owen, Graves, and more.

Plays include Shakespeare’s longest play, Hamlet, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera The Pirates of Penzance.

The Golden Age of British Mysteries introduces students to one of the most popular genres in British literature.

British Humor is examined in several stories by P.G. Wodehouse, H. H. Munro, and A. A. Milne.

British Essays include works by Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot, and Max Beerhohm.

The writing component has been expanded to include:

  • three five-paragraph essays, two five-page essays, a book report, and a classic essay
  • detailed instructions
  • an example essay as a model for each assignment

A Teacher’s Guide, located in the back of the book, includes novel summaries, answers, and more, making this British Literature curriculum easy to use!

Please Note: To complete the assignments in this manual, the student will need the following books, which may be obtained through your library or purchased from bookstores or online.

The newly revised 4th Edition of Learning Language Arts Through Literature: The Gold Book – British Literature offers an even stronger and easier-to-use approach to classic British Literature. This edition features additional literature, including classic British plays along with enhanced writing instruction and a more visually engaging layout. Lessons are clearly divided into 5 daily sections with bold headings, helpful sidebars, and graphic organizers that guide students step by step, making it easier to stay organized and on pace.

Students experience a rich collection of British literature across multiple genres, including novels, poetry, drama, and essays. This edition has a more condensed study of poetry, but also introduces British humor and mystery, adding a fun variety! Organized around the Romantic, Victorian, and Modern time periods, students see how literature develops over time. Works studied include Emma, A Tale of Two Cities, Frankenstein, Animal Farm, and The Hobbit, which is new to this edition. Additional selections are drawn from the LLATL British Literature Anthology (in print or e-book), including the plays Hamlet and the Pirates of Penzance. Required literature is available as a convenient package, may be purchased individually, or borrowed through your local library.

Intended to be completed over 36 weeks, this program provides one high school credit with a manageable daily workload. Writing instruction is integrated throughout the Gold Book (print or e-book), guiding students through the process rather than just assigning papers. Model essays demonstrate expectations and help students visualize the structure of high-quality work. Students’ progress from guided 5 paragraph essays to longer compositions, including a classic essay, two 5-page essays and a book report. Daily work includes reading, vocabulary, poetry assignments, and thoughtful writing prompts to help students analyze and engage more deeply with what they’re reading. The book is non-consumable – all written work is to be done in a separate notebook. While oral discussion is beneficial and encouraged, the program is designed so students can work independently. A Teacher section in the back of the book provides answers, novel summaries, and writing assessments, allowing students and teacher to work from the same text. The optional Course Notes, Tests, and Test Answer Key (in print or e-book) provides additional study notes, author background, and tests (with test answers!) for review and evaluation.

In this new edition, faith-based questions and Scripture references have been removed to better serve a wider range of settings, but families can still easily incorporate their own faith perspective as desired. With the addition of new literature, expanded writing instruction, and a reorganization of lessons, the 4th Edition is not compatible with the previous 3rd Edition. ~Nancie
