Richard Wurmbrand (CHT&N)
As he tried to think calmly about faith, Richard realized that he didn't want anything to do with Christianity, even if it did turn out to be true. He could only imagine life as a Christian Jew, and what he imagined was awful. No one in his or her right mind would choose such a path. At least, Richard was sure that he would not choose it.
Richard Wurmbrand, founder of Voice of the Martyrs, was once a young atheist determined to experience everything the world had to offer. Yet he regretted that God did not exist, wishing that a heart of love beat somewhere in the universe.
When the Romanian found that heart of love in Jesus Christ, he had the courage to serve Christ unswervingly even as his homeland sided with the Nazis and then sank into the new horrors of post-war Communism. Stubbornly respecting the worst enemies as fellow human beings and repaying hatred with love, the beloved pastor would spend years as a prisoner of the state, tortured and beaten, for preaching the gospel of peace (1909–2001).
This best-selling, missionary biography series - Christian Heroes: Then & Now - chronicles the exciting, challenging, and deeply touching true stories of ordinary men and women whose trust in God accomplished extraordinary exploits for His kingdom and glory.
When I compared this series to a similar series, I favored this one for several reasons. The stories are told in a very personable way, allowing the reader to feel like he really knows the person. While it's not told in first-person, the details and emotions make it seem like that person is actually sharing their own story. This series also goes into more detail, including their childhood, so you can see how they were raised and what they were like in their youth. Instead of just telling the facts, you read about funny instances that happened to them, things they probably wrote home about to give their family and friends a laugh. As you read about their life you can see the hand of God leading them, and how they faithfully strive to serve Him, even when it seems impossible. My sample was Amy Carmichael, who was a very obedient woman. When everyone told her to stay, she went anyway, because she knew God was calling her. She traveled, overcoming many disappointments to carry the Word of God to people in India and Japan. These are really uplifting books; seeing how obediently the men and women followed God is truly inspiring.
Several of the biographies are now available as audiobooks on CD. These run about 4-5 hours in length and are a great format to enjoy as a family. Biographies of women are read by a woman and biographies of a man are read by a man. - Stephanie
