Description

This Young Reader’s Edition Land of Hope, Volume 2 focuses on the making of modern America, from 1877- 2020, and the people, ideas, and events that played a part. The text is slightly simplified from the original version of Land of Hope, but middle schoolers may still find unfamiliar vocabulary and concepts a bit challenging. I love the goal of helping younger Americans to become mature, informed, engaged, and grateful American citizens. 258 pgs, pb. ~Nancie

Publisher's Description of Young Reader's Edition to Land of Hope (Volume 2)
By the dawn of the twentieth century, the United States had become the world’s greatest economic power and an increasingly important actor on the world stage. Yet success presented a challenge to the country not to lose sight of its heritage of constitutional liberty and the virtues that had made its flourishing possible. That challenge remains for us today.
Category Description for Young Reader's Edition Land of Hope

This two-volume Young Reader’s Edition Land of Hope was written by Hillsdale College faculty member, Wilfred McClay, who’s passion for passing an accurate version of American history on to the next generation is evident. In a day when misinformation is everywhere, he takes a balanced approach. Delving into the struggles of our past, great accomplishments are celebrated –giving students many reasons to love and be proud of their country. But America’s faults (such as slavery) are also acknowledged, helping us learn important lessons from our past. Although geared for 5th/6th grade students, these books are not an “easy read” and will be difficult for some at that level. They do make wonderful family read-alouds and are a perfect history “spine” for adding onto, with activities to bring the material to life. Volume 1 is focused on the shaping of a new nation, from 1492 -1877, and the people, ideas, and events that played a part. Volume 2 focuses on the making of modern America, from 1877- 2020. Each book has a reinforced soft cover, thick pages, and a beautiful center section filled with glossy pictures to provide rich visual context for readers. ~Nancie
