Description

Heart of Thanks Discovery Guide is the teaching component of the set. Inside you will find 3 units, each with a planning grid, materials list, and 4 days of lessons. Lessons are labeled Day 1, Day 2, and on, but you do not have to do 4 consecutive days. Feel free to adjust the “days” to fit your family. This works out to 12 days total, each with several activities (outlined below). You could finish this Guide in 3 weeks or spread it over 6 weeks.

Also essential is the Student Book and the reading materials. For Heart of Thanks, these books include

Each unit centers around a book and begins with you reading the book aloud to your child. The Guide includes dialogue you can add, like what to say before, during, and after reading the book aloud. For example, Read the first page and ask your child, “What does it mean to feel glum?” These pauses provide opportunities for interaction. You are building language skills!

There is a Bible Connection to the story, again, scripted for the parent. Use the script as much or as little as you wish.

Writing activities encourage journaling. There will be a range of handwriting abilities, and that is okay. Students write in their own Student Book on formatted pages.

Word work is also completed in the Student Book and practices high frequency words like all, is, and, of, day, saw, etc. A copywork task follows where the child rewrites a sentence or verse.

Extension Activities can be a game or art project included in the Student Book. Sometimes you get a field trip idea! Any additional art supplies will be noted at the beginning of the lesson.

Category Description for Total Language Plus K-2 Discovery Guides

Total Language Plus Discovery Guides for kindergarten to second grade are engaging seasonal studies that introduce young learners to fiction and non-fiction, build language skills and vocabulary, and provide practice in listening comprehension. They make learning fun for both the parent/teacher and the students!

Phonics is not part of the instruction. Rather, these guides offer an opportunity to engage with your child and build a love of reading! The K-2 guides are new from the publishers of the TLP Discovery Guides, making the Total Language Plus program a great fit for students from K to 12.

Literature-based units take approximately a month to complete. The pacing will vary according to your family’s needs. You might do 4 days in a row, 2-3 days a week, or a daily lesson. This provides parents with guided flexibility. You will interact with your child the entire lesson, but the prep work is done for you. This combination of low prep/high interaction is an enjoyable lesson format for many parents!

Components essential to the program include a Discovery Guide for the parent/teacher, a consumable Student Book, and the literature books used in each unit (a mix of fiction and non-fiction). A Christian worldview is presented and Bible verses from the New International Reader’s Version Bible, a simplified version of the NIV, are referenced.

We currently offer Hearts of Thanks and Seasons, Squash and Scarecrows. Wintry Treasury will be next, with other titles to come. More details on each Guide can be found in those specific descriptions.
