The newly revised 4th Edition of Learning
Language Arts through Literature: The Gold Book - American Literature
builds on what families have loved for years – while making it even stronger
and easier to use. This edition includes even more literature along with expanded
writing instruction and a more visually friendly layout. Lessons are clearly
organized into 5 daily sections with bold labels, helpful text boxes, and
graphic organizers that guide students step by step.
Students engage with a rich selection of American literature
across a variety of genres, including short stories, novels, poetry, and drama.
Works studied include The Red Badge of Courage, The Old Man and the
Sea, The Pearl, The Mentor Book of Major American Poets, Great
American Short Stories, and some new to this edition: White Fang, and
the classic American plays Harvey and Our Town. The addition of
drama brings a new dimension to the course, giving students opportunity not
only to read and analyze, but even to perform selections like monologues. Required
literature titles are available as a convenient Package but could also be purchased
used or sourced through your local library.
Intended to be completed over 36 weeks, this program
provides one high school credit with a manageable daily workload. Writing
instruction is woven throughout the Gold Book (in
print or e-book), guiding students through the process rather than just
assigning papers. Model essays demonstrate expectations and help students
visualize the structure of high-quality work. In addition to several structured
five-paragraph essays – including narrative, poetry analysis, and persuasive, students
also complete a short story and a classic essay. Daily work includes reading, vocabulary,
poetry assignments, and thoughtful writing prompts to help students analyze and
engage more deeply with what they’re reading. The book is non-consumable – all
written work is to be done in a separate notebook. While oral discussion is beneficial
and encouraged, the program is designed so students can work independently. A Teacher
section in the back of the book provides answers, novel summaries, and
writing assessments, allowing students and teacher to work from the same text. The
optional Course
Notes, Tests, and Test Answer Key (in print or e-book) provides
additional study notes, author background, and tests (with test answers!) for
review and evaluation.
In this new edition, faith-based questions and Scripture
references have been removed to better serve a wider range of settings, but
families can still easily incorporate their own faith perspective as desired.
With the addition of new literature, expanded writing instruction, and a
reorganization of lessons, the 4th Edition is not compatible with
the previous 3rd Edition. ~Nancie
