Description
Publisher's Description of Cameron Townsend (Christian Heroes Then & Now)
The Cakchiquel man became indignant when Cam offered him a tract in Spanish. "Do you have one in Cakchiquel?" he asked. "There are none, I'm sorry," replied Cam. "Well," retorted the man, "if your God is so great, why can't he speak my language?"
In one decisive moment, Cameron Townsend understood that God had called him to translate the Bible into the language of his Guatemalan friends. For Cam, the obstacles were small in comparison to the growing reward of helping the diverse people of Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru read God's life-changing Word for themselves.

Quick on his feet and slow to give up, Cam started Wycliffe Bible Translators with the dream of making the Good News available in every language. Since 1942, Wycliffe has translated the entire Bible into hundreds of languages, spreading God's word to people all over the world (1896-1982).
Category Description for Christian Heroes: Then and Now

When I compared this series to a similar series, I favored this one for several reasons. The stories are told in a very personable way, allowing the reader to feel like he really knows the person. While it's not told in first-person, the details and emotions make it seem like that person is actually sharing their own story. This series also goes into more detail, including their childhood, so you can see how they were raised and what they were like in their youth. Instead of just telling the facts, you read about funny instances that happened to them, things they probably wrote home about to give their family and friends a laugh. As you read about their life you can see the hand of God leading them, and how they faithfully strive to serve Him, even when it seems impossible. My sample was Amy Carmichael, who was a very obedient woman. When everyone told her to stay, she went anyway, because she knew God was calling her. She traveled, overcoming many disappointments to carry the Word of God to people in India and Japan. These are really uplifting books; seeing how obediently the men and women followed God is truly inspiring.

Several of the biographies are now available as audiobooks on CD. These run about 4-5 hours in length and are a great format to enjoy as a family. Biographies of women are read by a woman and biographies of a man are read by a man. - Stephanie
