Description

This tried-and-true drill book has been helping students read well for over 50 years! Use it alongside other reading programs as a supplement to increase fluency, or with the Teacher Guide as a stand-alone phonics program. A knowledge of all letter sounds before beginning is important, but you could use the Victory Pre-Drill Book to accomplish this task. Front pages of the book outline the methodology, phonetic rules, victory vowel chart, spelling rules, terms to know, and syllable types. Then comes the drill pages with lists of words in columns, organized by phonetic relationships and increasing in difficulty as the book progresses. Eventually, students will be timed for 1 minute, competing against themselves to try and beat their previous times. A chart suggests how many words per minute to aim for depending on grade level, but teachers may decide how best to challenge students. Recording sheets are found in the Teacher’s Guide, along with guidance for introducing each concept as you work through the book. The Victory Drill Book Worksheets (purchased separately) provide extra pencil-and-paper practice for each page in the book. With consistent practice of a few minutes a day, students can develop fluency and the ability to sound out words rapidly!

Publisher's Description of Victory Drill Book, Third Edition

The key to the Victory Drill Book's effectiveness is that lists of words are strategically grouped together by phonetic sounds. As the sounds are mastered, students become progressively better prepared for paragraph reading. In the process, an emphasis on speed enhances the transition from "sounding out" to efficient reading.

The Victory Drill Book offers an immediate edge in developing those life-shaping skills by providing a systematic approach to high speed phonetic reading. Designed for either a total-class or individualized approach, the Victory Drill Book is as effective in a home-school setting as in a structured classroom, producing outcomes that will help ensure students' ongoing success in every other segment of their education.
