I started using this book for my 7 year old and 5 year old. It is very short yet effective lessons. I am surprised that they have not complained once about it! It is very much worth the price. My 7 year old boy hates writing, so this book is perfect because there is minimal writing involved at this level and when there is, we use a white board. Even my 2 year old is memorizing the poems! I also love that it is not consumable.

My son and I have enjoyed working through this book. Since my son isn't reading proficiently, FLL method of oral learning with me reading to him assures me his grammar isn't being left on the back burner but rather building blocks of essential grammar know how are well established to memory.

Favorite subject
My 6 year old daughter loves her grammar lessons from this book. She requests grammar even on days it's not scheduled!

No better grammar curriculum
So far we've used "First Language Lessons" 1,2, and 3, and we can't imagine a better grammar curriculum. The pace is slow and steady, with plenty of repetition, yet deftly lacking superfluity. The explanations of lessons are so comprehensive as to require no prerequisite knowledge by the parent for the given lesson. The author is meticulous in her presentation, commencing with the basics, and expertly revealing components of increasing complexity at just the right time, revealing the grand design of (English) grammar imbued in us by our Creator ( and perhaps tweaked here and there by people). We love it and highly recommend it!

Love this
This has been a great addition to our homeschool. My son loves these lessons. We try to add a little extra creativity to them (like turning the Caterpillar poem into an actual caterpillar craft, and then writing the poem on each part of the caterpillar's body...) My boys tend to enjoy that type of learning, so I love that we are easily able to add that in on our own. These lessons don't take very long to do either. I highly recommend! Wish I would have used this when my oldest son was in 1st grade.

Simple, Clear, Concise
I am really enjoying this curriculum with my almost-6-year-old. It's very accessible. She is also enjoying it. For only a few minutes a day, we are learning basic language skills. I highly recommend.

We really like Jessie Wise's "The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading." The classical approach just makes sense and covers all the bases.

A wild jump into helping my little fella who has apraxia of speech. He is struggling with sentence structure, building his vocabulary, and such. Also I am thrilled to find quality materials that do
NOT include phonics instruction. Some of "us" need a different approach.

I want to give my son a good and solid foundation to teaching grammar using the Classical and Charlotte Mason methods, and also that the lessons are not supposed to take a great deal of time to teach.

I've always been interested in trying out these language lessons. I've read the Well Trained Mind and classical homeschool my children so I hope these lessons will be a great addition.

To add in early years in conjunction with Classical Conversations and AAR curriculums. Like how it dives a bit deeper into the grammatical concepts to explore many of the english elements we memorize each week in CC.

Is this the second edition?
A shopper on Jul 8, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this is the 2nd edition with a 2010 copyright.
does this require a teachers manuel?
nancy on May 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, this is basically a teachers manual and student book combined. The lessons are a scripted dialogue between you and your student. Some of the lessons assign copy work, but that is optional and would be done in a separate notebook. This is not a curriculum that has worksheets to complete. I have found it to be a very effective and gentle intro to grammar, and a nice change of pace after completing a math page.
Does this require the accompanying CD?
Amanda P on Nov 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does not, we did find the cd helpful for poem memorization as my son could listen to it on repeat while I worked with my younger daughter, cooked lunch, etc.
