The answer key is sometimes not enough if you don't remember how to solve the problem. This gives step by step guidelines to each answer

If you want a challenging Math course to help prepare for college, this is it. Every chapter has details of how work need to be completed, samples, practices. Supplemental material are: CD Dive, test questions, answers with OR without work being shown. Whatever your needs, Saxon is prepared to help meet them throughout any level of Math.

My kids are using Saxon Math and doing quite well. The responsible ones can check their own work with the solutions manual, so the only parental involvement is to test them periodically. They rarely really need help, and their standardized test scores are several grades ahead. Thank you, Saxon!<br />BTW, you can start by teaching them the basics yourself and pick up the Saxon Math 3 or 5/4 as soon as they are ready.

All these Saxon materials prove to be useful for our boys. The solution manual allows them to see how a problem in question is actually done. They are largely independent in their math studies giving credit to natural ability but greatly to the curriculum resources which are carried in Saxon.

Good book
Its very useful book for teaching advanced math.

Not thrilled
We have used Saxon Math from kindergarten all the way to Advanced Math, and we have always been very happy with each level. We are only five lessons into the Advanced Mathematics textbook, but so far we are not thrilled. In all the previous levels, the lessons are relatively short and there are practice problems directly related to the lesson. The Advanced Math lessons are very long and there are no practice problems to help the student practice the new concepts before starting the problem set.

Another complaint is that in the lower level texts, the lesson number is included with each problem in the problem set, so if the student has forgotten how to do a problem, they can look back and find the lesson to review. This feature does not exist in the Advanced Math textbook.

Finally, I understand that in the real world not all problems have simple solutions or simple numbers, but each problem takes so many steps to solve with complicated numbers that the problem set takes a long time to complete.

The preface mentions that this book is a four semester course for the average student. Because there are no practice problems to go with the lesson, it is difficult to break the lesson down into two "class periods." It's more like, "Read the lesson and take several days to complete the problem set."

I'm sure many people will use this book for their child and think its great. I just feel the jump in difficulty from Algebra II to Advanced Mathematics was quite large. I don't feel the Algebra II book quite prepared us for the increase in difficulty.

Indispensible, even if you remember the math
Even an engineer doesn't remember every single topic in Saxon's Advanced Math. Get the solutions manual so you won't get stuck while helping your student through a sticky problem set.
