The Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C student workbooks provides pre-literacy instruction and reinforcing exercises with a focus on visual identification of consonants, their written lowercase letter forms and their sound-symbol relationships. Each lesson addresses the principles of effective reading instruction and follows the same easy-to-use format. The Teachers Guide is required for providing listening exercises.

The Teachers Guide for Workbooks A, B and C expands on the skills presented in these books, providing teachers with various options for instruction and reinforcement. The wide variety of activities may be adapted for whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one learning situations.

The 60 Picture-Letter Cards can be used for supplementary visual and auditory work and match key words in the student workbooks. Letter cards allow students to practice letter identification and recognition. Picture-letter combination cards help students map sounds to symbols. Use with Get Ready, Get Set, and Go for The Code, A, B, and C workbooks.

The Workbooks, Explode The Code Books 1-8 focus on Phonemic Awareness, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Writing. All workbooks have several review lessons and a posttest. Explode The Code Half Books (1 -6 ) focus on more practice and reinforcement with skills in workbooks 1-6.

Code Cards (1 card for every concept introduced in Books 1-3.) include suggestions for daily practice activities and games. Each card is marked with the book and page number on the concept, which it is introduced.

Teachers Guides (Books 1-8) incorporate a quick review, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension in every lesson. Suggestions for writing practice and differentiated instruction are provided for each lesson. Specific answers to the student pages are not offered, as the book assumes student and teacher will be completing these together. However, answers for pre-test and post-test questions are included. Please also note these books only cover the "whole" levels, not the 1/2 levels.

Explode The Code Placement Tests are designed to assess students encoding and decoding skills. All tests can be given in either a group setting or individually, with the exception of Test 4, which must be administered individually. Included are directions for administering and analyzing results; answer keys and reproducible test forms.

Category Description for Explode the Code:

A phonics program, utilizing workbooks, covering letter sounds and most phonograms. Ample practice using a variety of exercises helps children to both learn and reinforce reading skills. These are particularly well-conceived, with alternate (incorrect) choices containing most probable letter or word confusions. This will assure well-honed phonetic reading skills. There is plenty of practice here, so if you use these in conjunction with another phonics program (for reinforcement), you will want to pick and choose exercises or pages to complete. The "1/2" level books provide practice for the skills learned in the whole-level books Please note that Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code no longer include teacher's guide inserts. A much-enhanced teacher's guide is now available separately, that contains teaching information and answers for these three books. Teacher's guides are available for upper levels as well, with each teacher's guide covering two levels.

The new second edition features some small changes from the original, including revised student instructions, some updated content and artwork, and revised stories in Book 7 and 8. There is also a new chart on the inside front cover of the teacher guides which shows the overall lesson routine.

Explode the Code books are a staple of our homeschooling & have been for 14+ years! Other resources have served us for a season but these books have never outlived their usefulness. Our 7th child is going through the Get Ready for the Code series this year, too.

Has anyone use the old version and the new version? Is there a big difference?
A shopper on Apr 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Per the publisher: Changes in the 2nd edition Workbooks and Teacher Guides: In Workbooks: 1) revised student directions for clarity and ease of understanding; 2) Updated content to clarify previously confusing or problematic examples; 3) Stories in Books 7 and 8 were revised and replaced with new content. In Teacher Guides: 1. "Lesson Routine at a Glance" chart is featured on the inside front cover of all guides. 2. Chart presents essential literacy skills and the systematic process in which ETC implements them. Artwork Updates: Updated images throughout the program to eliminate obsolete and confusing images as well as reflect the 21st century culture. After reviewing/comparing, there are minimal changes. A few graphics have changed and the upper level books (6 and up) have some expanded instruction. Page numbers align between editions. 2nd ed. address CCSS but does not align lessons to the CC; it also describes the program as O-G (if complete activities in TG)-additional requirements to be OG are the ETC Code Cards and the online activities (fee based);for a comprehensive program, the TG recommends 15-20 min. direct phonics instruction, plus literacy activities reading stories, chapter books, and non fiction selections. Also recommended are writing, grammar, spelling and oral work, but they make no recommendations. The 2nd ed also has some font changes in the student samples (more traditional). There are updated stories in books 7 and 8.
my sister gave me an ETC 6.5 that she did not end up using. can I use that instead of book 6?
User on Nov 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I checked the tables of contents, and it looks like they cover the same sounds in each book. 6.5 does not have the three review lessons, but otherwise they seem to be similar (but different words and activities, so you can use both books without redundancy). So, unless your student needs to do both for review, I think you could just use 6.5. If you need review later, you can just do book 6 next.

Didn't Live Up to the Hype!
I'm not sure what all the hype is about for this program. To be honest, me and my student were quite disappointed. We ended up having to redo all our phonics in another program because my student retained so little! Big disappointment! The paper tears when you erase it, many pictures are outdated and are not commonly used words anymore (I had to explain many of them to my student), and I was just not impressed.
