Publisher Description:

The Basics of Critical Thinking book is designed to teach critical thinking to middle and upper elementary students. Many workbooks claim to teach or develop critical thinking skills, but most of these products never define critical thinking or try to teach the meaning to students. This book defines and teaches critical thinking in a way all students can understand through simple explanations, diagrams, and short, engaging activities. In addition to being a course in critical thinking, the activities in this book can be used to supplement lessons in all subjects.

Although this book teaches common argument forms, its primary focus is identifying and valuating evidence the very basis of critical thinking. Most propaganda, advertising schemes, legal trickery, and bad science are not the result of complex arguments; they are the result of half-truths and simple arguments. Students who successfully complete this book will have a fundamental set of critical thinking skills they can use their entire lives.

Our family has used SO MANY books from the Critical Thinking Co. and I have recommended them over and over. My son is finishing up the Building Thinking Skills Level 2 (he is 5th Grade) and I am hoping this book will keep him developing his thinking skills in the upcoming school year. I haven't seen this one yet, but feel confident enough in the company's products to give it a try.

Is this too simple for a 9th grader? He hasn’t completed any critical thinking books yet. If he does do this, would it count as a half or full credit?
Angela R on Jul 14, 2022
BEST ANSWER: To me, this book could be self lead by that 9th grader. I think it is detailed enough to provide a solid base. Thinking half credit. (My eldest is 10)
Hi, I was wondering how many pages does this book have? And how long does it take to complete? In other words, how many pages per day? Thank you so much.
User on Sep 10, 2019
BEST ANSWER: There are 134 pages of work/text, although an individual lesson usually ranges over several pages, so you probably do not want to plan on one page a day. I am just now going through the book with my child: we are on page 17 at day 8, for a sort of reference. Each lesson so far has taken about 20 minutes to complete and another 5 to go over later. Also, there are answers for each exercise at the end of the book, just in case.
Is there a teacher manual available? Or are there answers in the back of the student book?
Sarah on Jul 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Answers are in the back of this student book.

Great Course for Starting the Critical Thinking Journey
To encourage our kids to develop analytic and discernment skills, we chose this workbook as a great entry point into this process. As our kids are on the top end of the recommended grades spectrum for this book (Grade 8 and 10, respectively), we found this to be a fun resource to have a conversation-based program. This publisher - The Critical Thinking Co. - does publish additional texts for advanced discussions that we plan to incorporate in future years.

Bottom line - teaching discernment and critical thinking/analytical skills are a lifeskill that can be honed throughout our lives. This is proving to be a solid resource to begin this journey.

Basics of Critical Thinking...necessary
Sometimes we force our (children)students to dive into to doing hard things without giving them the basics first. This book is a great stepping stone workbook toward logical thinking. And because it's basic, that makes it extremely achievable for the students to do it quickly and without much struggle, complaining, or misunderstanding. Not only have I used this book with my own children, but I use it to teach my Intro. to Logic Class designed for grades 7-9.

I bought this for my 6th grader. He is really enjoying doing this book. It makes it easy to understand the different critical thinking aspects that there are and it is preparing him for other more difficult books. We started with a different book but realized it was too much for him right now. I started looking and found this one and thought it would be a good beginning book and it is! I think after this book he will be ready for the other book!
