Combine vocabulary building with exposure to quality literature and what do you get? Vocabu-Lit! In each of the 36 lessons, a short (half-page) segment of literature is provided. The 10 master words to be studied in the lesson are shown in bold print in the reading selection. Our sample was from the 8th grade book, and featured such authors as Robert Louis Stevenson, Stephen Crane, Jack London, Arthur Conan Doyle, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Daniel Defoe, and Charles Dickens. Literature selections included segments from Black Beauty, Red Badge of Courage, Robinson Crusoe, Call of the Wild, and A Christmas Carol.

Vocabulary exercises include writing a definition of each word before and after looking it up in the dictionary, choosing synonyms and antonyms from a list provided, filling in the master words in analogies, and filling in the master words in a sentence. The Teacher Edition is a copy of the student book with the answers filled in. Vocabulary words chosen are appropriate for the grade level and to encourage students to increase vocabulary and knowledge of good literature simultaneously.

The folks at Perfection Learning responded to requests for a Vocabu-Lit for younger students. Now available for 2nd through 5th grade. Levels B, C, and D (2nd-4th) have appealing kid-friendly graphics, a larger font, wider spacing, fewer lessons (20-24) and word lists of 8 to 10 words but the same solid vocabulary instruction and activities. Level E (5th grade) contains 32 lessons, but follows the same general format as levels F through L.

Excited to try this program after Cathy Duffy's review of it. I was choosing between this and Vocabulary from Classical Roots. I ultimately chose Vocabu-Lit because we can use it the entire school year, and I'm hoping that some of the lessons will go along with the classical literature units we'll be doing.

This series is one of the best vocabulary books around. As you get into the higher grades, it includes exercises that require critical thinking and true understanding of each word. I have been using this series for all my children for over 5 years.

We have used several different curriculums for vocabulary, but these are the first books that the girls truly enjoyed. I love that it teaches them to try to infer meaning from a story excerpt and that they seem to be retaining most of the vocabulary without having to memorize definitions. I also like the exercises that are similar to the comparison questions that prepare them for the SAT/ACT. They love the variety of exercises included. It is a great vocabulary program!

Love the previous ones. The linking to literature, learning to use dictionary in a brief way in the back of the book, making word associations, using the words in different contexts. Really builds prior knowledge to new knowledge and we leave each week firmly knowing and being able to use the vocabulary words. Love it!

How are the word definitions given? Each as it would appear in the dictionary?

BEST ANSWER: I no longer have the student workbook, but I believe it would be the same as in the teacher's guide. In the teacher's guide the glossary gives the definition based on how the vocabulary word is used in the lesson's literature text. So if a word has multiple meanings or can be used as multiple parts of speech then the glossary definition just gives the one part of speech/definition that matches how it was used in the lesson. Otherwise, the format looks like a dictionary entry. However, it is a more basic version like you would see in a children's dictionary. Hope that helps!

I like the varied, but predictable approach to this vocabulary series. Each exercise is a different activity that uses/teaches a different skill set. However, each lesson is consistently broken up into seven exercises and the activities rotate so they are not completely brand new each week. My son gets variety yet he also still knows what to expect.

We break it up for the week as follows:
Mon: Exercise 1 & 2
Tues: Exercise 3, 4 & 5
Wed: Exercise 6
Thurs: Exercise 7
Fri: Exam

Vocab usually takes about 15-20 minutes to complete depending on the day.

I didn't give 5 stars as I feel there is still room for improvement. I feel that the words are often a little too easy. Also, they focus on the word based on how it is used in the literary passage. This makes sense and most often the word is used as its most common part of speech. However, there are a few that get a tad confusing because the "common" way of using the word isn't how it's used in the text. That sometimes confuses my son because he thinks of the word as a verb, for example, but in the text it's used as a noun. Not a huge deal and it's good for him to have to reread the passage and think more critically. Overall I like the book.

The teacher manual for level "D" includes the tests and answer keys. However, the test does not "rip out" of the book and the manual specifically says that photocopies are prohibited. I am not certain how they expect you to actually administer the exam! The exams are simple enough so we have taken to giving them orally and my son simply writes his response on a separate paper.

The teacher manual isn't really necessary for correcting the exercises at this level, but it does make it a whole lot quicker and easier! I personally don't want to do each assignment in whole to correct the work so I purchase the teacher manual!
