Publisher Description:

The Discovery of Deduction: An Introduction to Formal Logic will welcome your students into the fascinating realm of formal, deductive logic. This text teaches students how an argument is put together—the form or structure of an argument. It pulls back the curtain to show students not only how arguments work, but also how to assess what’s going on in their own minds.

The Discovery of Deduction Teacher’s Edition features the entire student text, along with an answer key, teaching tips, sample essays, dialogues, and arguments.

The Discovery of Deduction is recommended for students who have studied informal fallacies, such as those taught in The Art of Argument: An Introduction to the Informal Fallacies; however, the text does also stand on its own as an independent study of formal logic.

Category Description for Discovery of Deduction:

The "let's get down to formal logic" book in the series, looking at reasoning in the abstract and focusing primarily on deductive reasoning. Through Socratic dialogue, definitional distinctions, and a sort of discussion/response format, the student is led through the study which includes a history of logic, propositions and their relationships, categorical syllogisms, and ends with terms and definitions. Appendices include Venn diagrams of syllogisms as well as an essay on handling religious, moral, and ethical disputes. Both Student and TE include Endnotes and Glossary, and Bibliography. 324 pgs. pb

Laced with humor and practical applications, Classical Academic Press strives to make logic accessible. And succeeds, too! The series has more background material than other logic books plus lots of "modern" examples. Making great use of dialogues and cartoons, there are some practice exercises but the emphasis is more on the "meat" of the text rather than on doing exercises. This sets them apart from other logic courses and makes them the perfect choice for students who want or need background information more than practice. This series is user-friendly and requires very little prep on the teacher's part although teacher-student interaction is necessary to maximize the learning. Art of Argument would be the starting place for a Jr. High student followed by Argument Builder and/or Discovery of Deduction, which can stand alone or be used together.

Each Student Text is designed to be worked in with the student thinking through and writing out responses to the material being presented. Teacher Editions are predominantly full-text answer keys but often include teacher's notes (a list of suggestions and recommendations for teaching the course) as well as ideas for supplementing and enriching the study. ~ Janice

Does the teacher's edition include worksheets and unit assessments, or is the instructor to prepare those independently?

BEST ANSWER: The teacher’s book is a expanded version of the student text. It contains all the answers to the exercises, includes notes for teaching, and sample dialogues. For tests and assessments, you need to purchase a separate PDF. Personally, I did not buy the PDF; I just used some of the reviews in the book as an assessment. That seemed to work well enough for my goals for my student. I also required my child to find examples from the media and work through those, putting them in proper form and then analyzing them for validity and soundness. I would highly recommend buying the teacher book.
Is the teacher's edition necessary for this course, or can students study independently? I would prefer to purchase the quiz/test cd only.

BEST ANSWER: Teacher Editions are predominantly full-text answer keys but often include teacher's notes (a list of suggestions and recommendations for teaching the course) as well as ideas for supplementing and enriching the study. The TEs are recommended.
