Category Description for McGuffey's Eclectic Readers:

Over 100 years of educational use and still making a worthwhile contribution to homeschooling! Well-Trained Mind suggests using the McGuffey's as read aloud material for students starting with the Third Reader after completing phonics instruction. And why not? The introductory material in each reader is an elocution course in and of itself. That's "elocution" as in "the skill of clear and expressive speech". To give you an idea of the breadth and scope of the readings in these books, here is a sampling from the Fifth Reader: history - The Battle of Blenheim (Southey), poetry - The Village Blacksmith (Longfellow), character education - Do Not Meddle (unknown), science - The Passenger Pigeon (Audubon), and literature - Squeere's Method (Dickens). There are delightful period illustrations such as The Fish I Didn't Catch throughout (albeit sparsely) the books. Don't be fooled by the "Revised Edition" on the front cover. The revision happened somewhere between the original copyright date of 1879 and the last copyright date of 1920. These hardcover reprints from John Wiley & Sons are authentic.

This is the primary book series that I use to teach my children to read. I love the short stories and the historical use of words that expand my child's knowledge and exposes him to how a word can have different meanings or be changed by time and culture.

We like the old stories and the way language was spoken when these were written. We enjoy them a lot.

Is this different than the McGuffey first reader and second and third reader set that goes through fourth reader?

BEST ANSWER: We carry three different versions of the McGuffey Readers. This edition has a copyright of 1879 and has been reprinted in a facsimile edition. Here is that complete series:

https://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist?subject=Reading%2FLiterature/6&category=McGuffey%27s+Eclectic+Readers/1453

We also carry the "original" edition which was originally published in 1836 and has been re-typeset but has all the original content. Its content is totally different from the later version:

https://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist?subject=Reading%2FLiterature/6&category=Mcguffey%27s+Eclectic+Readers+1836+Ed./6720

We also carry a version that was first published in 1857 and has beeen reprinted with additional teacher helps and information which reflects a Charlotte Mason perspective:
