Publisher Description:

What makes this 320-page book different from other American history book is the integration of critical thinking into the content lessons. The questions in this book require deeper analysis and frequently ask for supporting evidence from the lesson. This in-depth analysis produces greater understanding, which results in better grades and higher test scores. Over time, students who practice critical thinking learn to apply it throughout their education and lives. This book also develops reading comprehension and writing skills, and challenge students to learn new vocabulary.

This colorful book brings U.S. history to life! It is full of fascinating facts, pictures, and maps. It can be used as a stand-alone textbook, supplement to your textbook, or as a review course for older students. The vocabulary and content skills are based on common state social studies standards. This book has both primary and secondary source information. Each lesson provides a passage students must read, followed by a series of questions. Questions are multiple choice, short answer, or short essay questions. Students are frequently asked to identify sentence evidence from the lesson that best supports the answer. Sample answers are provided which identify key points for the essays. In addition, there are section review activities and some bonus activities.

In these books, students will:

* Supply supporting evidence for many of their answers

* Supply essay evidence to support their conclusions by drawing on specific information from the lesson

* Draw inferences and conclusions based on their evaluation of the evidence

* Distinguish between facts and opinions

* Analyze historical chronology to see history as a series of interrelated events

* Acquire new vocabulary

* Learn to interpret and draw information from geographical maps, political cartoons, and charts

Category Description for U.S. History Detective:

Continuing the successful "detective" series from The Critical Thinking Company, the U.S. History Detective books can be used as a supplement to any history program, as a review course, or as a stand-alone text. The goal of these texts is to encourage and develop critical thinking, analysis, and reading comprehension through the study of U.S. history. Book One covers the span from Colonial Times to the Reconstruction after the Civil War. Book Two covers the Gilded Age (late 1800s) until 2016. Each lesson includes an informative text where each sentence is clearly numbered for easy reference. Colorful pictures, maps and timelines illustrate the text throughout. The question section in each lesson requires students to support their answers with specific references back to the text (hence the numbered sentences). This helps students get into the practice of providing supporting evidence for answers rather than relying simply on recall information. The various questions in each lesson will give students the opportunity to make inferences and draw conclusions based on their evaluation of the text, distinguish between fact and opinion, understand historical chronology, expand their vocabulary, link history with geography, and practice answering analytical essay questions. There are 65 lessons grouped into 9 sections. There are also more than 20 reviews throughout the book and answers to all lessons and reviews are included. This is a consumable book and permission is given to make copies for home or classroom use. ~ Zach

Because my son is dyslexic, I need books that are visually interesting and stick to the facts.

Son requested a workbook style program. Chose this because it looks to be a fairly straight forward (but thorough) review of US History. We will also be reading, "A Student’s Guide to US History" by Wilfred McClay, as well as a number of novels set within key historical events to round things out.

While we've stuck with Story of the World for the past 7 years, World History and US History Detective have made great supplements for my oldest Logic stage child. As we'll be in SOTW4 next year, we'll be needing the modern USHD book.

Love the Detective books, great way to get kids to read between the lines and make sure you understand what you have read. Plus getting a little history as you go!

My daughter has used the US History Detective Book 1 to supplement her other U.S. History text, and it worked well for her.

I have a son that does not enjoy sitting still but wants to learn history. He likes things that get straight to the point not long and boring. I like it to be educational and hold his attention. This seems to be the best of both worlds. I have not ever been disappointed in the "Critical Thinking" curriculum.

Like the way this is designed to include higher levels of thinking, including multiple choice answers that have the options of none of the answers being correct or all options correct, along with the option of a single correct answer. It takes far more thought AND they ask for you to record the sentence or paragraph that supports your answer.

My daughter really likes workbooks. The U.S. & World History Detective books are so handy. I plan on pairing this (along with Book 1) with the American Odyssey (from K12) and I'm good to go with my American History class. Extremely useful, great pictures, and it's secular. It's definitely open and go.

Is there an answer key in the book for the comprehension questions?
A shopper on Sep 29, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Yes there is - a very comprehensive one. It even gives "Key Points" for potential answers to the Analytical Short Essay Questions which I found very helpful as Teacher Mom.

In my opinion, this is a very well well- rounded great curriculum.
are there tests and quizzes?
A shopper on Feb 2, 2022
BEST ANSWER: There are not pages explicitly labeled as tests or quizzes. However, each of the 56 lessons contained in the workbook have ten comprehension questions. Nine of the questions are multiple choice evidence based meaning the student chooses the numbered sentence from the lesson that supports the correct answer. One question is a written response requiring multiple sentences to answer. Bonus activities are scattered throughout the lessons which provide additional comprehension material. There are also nine vocabulary reviews following a series of lessons. One might find sufficient content to grade and use as tests or quizzes. That is how we handled it for our 11th grade student.
Hi, Are the pages very colorful? Would you say that the book is predominantly in full color?
User on May 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello, I bought this book for my daughter. Almost every page has a photograph or a map. The maps are in full color. The photographs are in color or black and white due to the fact that older photos were black and white. Some of the photographs are on the small side but are clearly visible. My thought is that since the book is geared toward older learners it is not overly colorful but will still keep the interest of the learner.

I really wanted to like this book!
I rarely write reviews, but I felt like I wanted to save other people from my frustrations with this book. I actually read some good reviews on it and based my purchase on those reviews. We HATE this book. It is extremely dry and boring. It almost seems like the writers WANT you to hate history! History is fascinating and should be presented in a way that captures the reader's attention. This book presents all the information as dry, boring, and biased dribble. I recommend you look elsewhere....my search continues.

Nice, consice, and easy to use
This is a clearly laid out book. The lessons and activities are short but packed full of information. My kids are enjoying using this curriculum. I do supplement with some extra videos/books to add some variety and extra depth, but overall I recommend it.
