Category Description for Pentime Handwriting Series:

This program is designed to teach children handwriting with a minimum of assistance. Eight black and white workbooks help students master the skill of manuscript writing, transition into cursive, and continue to build cursive skills using smaller and smaller lines. In the first workbook, students focus on writing the individual letters on wide lines with a dotted midline. The correct strokes are shown (and numbered) for each letter along with plenty of space for children to practice. The second book continues practice of upper and lowercase letters but adds words and sentences as well. In place of stroke guides, a dot on each letter shows children where to start forming the letter. The third book (Transition) reviews manuscript for 35 pages and then jumps into cursive handwriting for the remaining 60 pages of the book, where students learn the strokes for individual cursive letters and practice connecting them. The rest of the series allows children to fully master cursive writing as they continually practice by writing the letters and copying longer and longer paragraphs on increasingly smaller lines (rulings gradually decrease from 1/2" in Grade 3 to 5/16" in Grade 8). Paragraphs range from fun sentences to Bible verses (close to the ASV version) to excerpts from essays on nature. Captions in the older grades provide interesting facts, and pretty border sheets to color are scattered throughout. - Steph

Homeschool Handwriting curriculum - it is a simple program that is easy to use and is not too much work for the kids. My oldest has beautiful penmanship after using 4 books in this program. I don't start my kids on cursive until 5th grade because none of them were ready for it before then.

I had such great results with my girl's attitudes when doing Cursive 4 that I'm having my 7 year old do Cursive 3, my 9 yo do 5 and my 11 yo do Cursive 6. We had done the Carson Dellosa and it was boring, we've done the Zaner-Blozer it was painfully slow. Sticking with what they usually beg me to do. Sometimes we put on some classical music and it a quiet time of writing and reflection. Big difference in our home.

My daughter likes to write about animals. I saw that both 5th and 6th grade cursive offers that. She definitely still needs practice writing in cursive and I like the looks of their practice work. Also, it's very inexpensive so it's worth a try!

could you skip from pentime 3 to pentime 5?

BEST ANSWER: I think that if the child was doing well with the last half of Pentime 3 where cursive is actually taught, they could skip Pentime 4 and move to 5. The lines get a little smaller, which could be difficult for some beginning writers to fit their work in. Also, the passages to copy get longer as one progresses through the series. To be thorough, ideally I would have students do each book in the series sequentially, however if an older kid finshed book 3 in 4th grade and seemed to have mastered the work, I would totally let this 5th grader start book 5!

Kids love this!
We are veterans with the cursive copybooks, we have done them all and when I ran out of cursive copywork I was at a loss for how to keep the skills going naturally. I finally asked friends for ideas and someone suggested these books - well, my kids absolutely love them! So I'm here to rave about them,

My son enjoys this book very much however I would prefer to have them right the same letter many more times over before they move on to the next. it is not enough practice sheets & he found writing paragraphs too difficult as the progression is not. Slow one.

The Best Hand Writing curriculum I have found!
