Product Description:

Reading about history is one thing; seeing pictures of historical artifacts, people, and places is another thing altogether. Each appeals in a different way. How fantastic is a resource that melds the two together, so you can see where things were taking place around the globe, and how people and places changed through the ages. By tying world history to maps, we get a colorful text that depicts history visually across the globe and through time. There are more than 60 hand-illustrated maps, all in full color, which are accompanied by authoritative text (in bite-sized paragraphs), timelines, and photos of people, places, and artifacts. The book looks as far back as 10,000 BC (which is not as far back as many secular history texts) and then divides history into four time periods: Ancient World, Medieval World, Exploration and Empire, and the Modern World (since 1800). 192 pages in hardcover, this book is durable enough to be enjoyed by the entire family. I have an advanced reader who is beginning her four year cycle of classical history; we ordered both this book and the Usborne Encyclopedia of World History to provide two different options as we move forward with our studies. I will say that the purchase is based more on recommendation from others and either or both would be equally welcome in any home.

This is for my daughter to use in her AP World History course in public high school. (It was not mentioned by the teacher; we are purchasing on our own.) We have another Kingfisher history encyclopedia that we used as we homeschooled, and we love the visuals and the little bits of text. We hope that seeing the concepts here in different ways and described in different terms will reinforce the lessons and provide a firmer grasp of the materials.

Planning to use this resource along with The Story of the World Vol. 1. Borrowed it from the library and fell in love with the illustrations.

We used the Kingfisher encyclopedias for science and history for elementary school, and loved them! Great illustrations and well represented! Thought this would be a nice addition for our 9th grade world history curriculum (PACS World History).

What is the difference between this and Kingfisher History Encyclopedia?
T I on Sep 14, 2020
BEST ANSWER: This books features historical maps and map-related information. The Encyclopedia has informational/textual information and illustrations for historical people, places, and things.
Is this a work book?
A shopper on Sep 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, it is a great atlas of ancient history, with history on each section to go along with the maps. We really enjoyed using it for our World History last year. The price is very reasonable for all the good information packed in here.
paperback or hardcover?
User on Jul 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: A beautiful hardcover! I was quite impressed with it. I used it to supplement our World History this past year. Hope this helps you.
Has the content of the book changed from the original 2010 edition (with the globe cover). I specifically would like to know if the hand drawn maps (e.g., on pg 8, 12 etc) are still in the new edition or if they have been replaced by photographs/ other images. If so, do you still have the old edition available? Thanks.
User on Jun 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We only have the revised edition (2016 copyright) available. I would describe the maps in this edition as "illustrated" rather than photographs. I'm not sure if they are the same as in the older edition but they do correspond to the samples shown for these two out of print Kingfisher publications - #29184 and #38257 (click through to the "view larger images" page).
