Product Description:

New 6th Edition for 2021. This Combo includes both the Student Book and the Teacher's Manual in one convenient set.

The Ancient History-Based Writing Lessons Teacher Manual includes reduced copies of all student pages. Accompanying teacher notes include specific insight into structures/styles being taught, vocabulary instruction, games, review, motivation ideas, and checklists. Suggested responses for many student activities are given (not the same as an answer key) but answers are provided for vocabulary quizzes. Information on how to access to course pdf downloads is also provided. These downloads include reproducible checklists and optional material.

The Student Book is consumable and provides all source texts as well as student pages. Reproducible (for families), all information the student needs is included in this book and, accordingly, the Student Resource Packet is no longer provided as a download. Removable, vocabulary cards (cardstock) are included. Some optional material as well as reproducible checklists are still available as pdf downloads with access information included in both the Student and Teacher Book.

Publisher Description:

New Edition for 2021. Experience the adventures of the ancient world! This theme-based writing curriculum exposes students to the ancient world through cultural literature and the study of famous places and events while they learn to write with the Structure and Style® Writing Method. Offering a full year of instruction for students in grades 4–7, these lessons cover all nine IEW Units. Vocabulary cards, literature suggestions, and access to helpful PDF downloads are also included. Purchase the Teacher’s Manual and Student Book together and save!

The 6th edition has been updated for 2021 and features 30 lessons for grades 4-7 with source texts on topics and cultures from ancient history, the wonders of the ancient world, Greek Myths, Roman engineering, the people of ancient Asia and much more. IEW structural units 1-9 are taught in sequence. The course scope and sequence provides weekly vocabulary words as well as literature suggestions. MLA information is now included.

In this new edition, there have been numerous changes to both topics and source texts. The components of this edition are not compatible with any previous edition. The Student Resource Packet is no longer included as a download (or required) since all information the student needs to complete the lessons is in the Student Book.

The Student Book is consumable but is reproducible (for single family purchasers) and includes removable cardstock vocabulary cards. Purchasers are able to download free pdf copies of reproducible checklists (32 pages) as well as these optional resources: simplified source texts, advanced additions, and exemplars

The Teacher Manual provides reduced copies of student pages accompanied by teaching suggestions. It's assumed that Teachers have viewed and have access to IEW's Teaching Writing Structure and Style video course and own the Seminar Workbook.

Category Description for Theme-Based Writing Lessons (IEW):

Based on specific topics or on events in history, these sets of writing lessons (same grade-range levels as the SSS) offer comprehensive, almost scripted instruction. All necessary source texts have been developed for busy parents and teachers like you. An IEW veteran and aficionado myself, I couldn't conceive of anything more complete than what is provided here. Each lesson offers comprehensive (just short of totally scripted) instruction. All necessary source texts are provided and are reproducible for one parent/one homeschool. Clear assignments (sometimes differentiated between levels) along with a checklist to aid both the student in preparation and the parent in grading. These are also designed to be used by the student to work on throughout the week. Based on specific topics or events in various segments of history, the lessons include grammar exercises, vocabulary development, quizzes, and games for review and reinforcement - along with the writing instruction, of course.

In all lessons students are encouraged to polish their final draft perhaps even adding illustrations. At the end of each course the student will have a personal portfolio collection of poems, stories, reports, essays and research papers. Lessons are taught at the beginning of each week allowing the rest of the week for students to complete the assignment which they should be able to do on their own. Teacher preparation is minimal. (Do I hear an emphatic "Yes!"?)

The courses are targeting a progressively more competent student with the assumption that students are working through the courses according to suggested grade levels. Therefore, there is an increasing complexity to the instructions, expectations, and assignments. Accordingly, teachers are encouraged to be flexible with plans. The beginning writer may need to spend more than the suggested week on difficult lessons or omit some of the grammar. Mature students may move more quickly to allow time for additional research writing and/or more creative essay writing.

Many of these courses can be used equally well within a homeschool with several different aged students and all can be used in a co-op/support school setting with more grade-specific groupings of students. It's assumed that parents/teachers have completed Teaching Writing Structure & Style (TWSS), IEW's DVD seminar for parents and teachers.

Some courses have both a Teacher and a Student Book. In these courses, instruction for the teacher is more extensive and both books are necessary as the course is designed to be interactive between the teacher and student. Teachers should plan to read over the lessons with the students and help as necessary, especially with outlining and brainstorming. A roll of tickets (available at office supply stores) is optional but very useful for encouragement and motivation. ~ Janice

I've found it very helpful to have a printed Teacher's Manual when working with IEW. It's helpful to me and my student. The student books are great. We are loving this method for a struggling writer! The exercises are rich and well-planned.

Teaching this class at our co-op this year and had to have the newer version. I usually buy directly from IEW but had to order some other stuff and I like the free shipping on Rainbow since I missed the IEW Freedom ship! :) Happy Writing!

How long is each lesson a day approximately?
A shopper on Oct 23, 2021
BEST ANSWER: About 45 minutes a day, but it depends on your child.
Is there any faith based content in this book or is it non-sectarian?
A shopper on Mar 12, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have last years edition that I bought last year from RR. There is one paper written about the Israelites and also one about the Exodus, but I think they can be written from a historical perspective if you want to avoid religiosity.( or avoid them altogether) The rest of the papers are completed on various aspects of ancient history: ziggurats, Spartans, Greek Myths, Ancient Greece and Rome, Roman engineering etc.
Does this include both the teacher and student book?
Joy N on May 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, Joy, it does. The teacher book has answers, teaching guide, additional games, and review exercises that are geared toward a class, but can easily be used for an individual student (eg homeschool environment). The student guide includes vocabulary index cards.
