Category Description for Giggly Guide to Grammar:

You can tell by simply looking at the cover of this book that it isn't your ordinary grammar curriculum. As you look at a stick drawing of a young man with a mouthful of 'gum' balls, you know you're in for a real grammar treat. The publisher refers to this book as, "Shel Silverstein meets Strunk & White."

Cathy Campbell has a real knack for making grammar understandable but keeping it humorous. There were times I laughed out loud at her drawings and use of descriptive words. The book is divided into 3 sections - grammar, usage, and mechanics. This is no light coverage of the topics, yet students will enjoy reading the definitions and explanations which use terminology such as 'varmints' and 'blahjectives' (vague adjectives which offer an unclear mental picture). The wacky writing examples are packed with unusual names, strange animals, people with questionable hygiene, mythical creatures and generally off-the-wall situations (while we haven't noticed anything outright objectionable here, this book may not appeal to the very conservative household). Excerpts from books like Harry Potter, Winnie-the-Pooh and authors including Dickens, Faulkner and Hemingway add spice as well. Funny blackline doodles appear throughout the book to add humor, but also to give a visual to accompany concepts - a curly-headed pig, a child with a small dragon atop its head, or a bulgy-eyed something.

A CD-ROM is included in the deluxe teacher edition which has printouts of the exercises found in the book, lessons presented in 3 formats - PDF, jpeg, and PowerPoint, writing pointer posters which are also found throughout the book, posters of the rules and definitions with those same cute blackline drawings from the book, classroom stationary for use with the different chapters, and the answer key for all exercises. However, we also offer the text individually, in case you need an extra for an additional student.

If you want a grammar and mechanics course that is solid but is written with a non-traditional flavor, take a gander at Giggly Guide to Grammar. s/c ~ Donna

We used this grammar refresher to keep my smart-but-distracted teen engaged and laughing while learning. It worked well as independent study. The only thing I wished I had were the printable worksheets - which are in this Teacher's Deluxe Edition. We plan to reuse this material now 2 years later to continue refreshing.

My daughter gets bored with reading and I thought this might make getting through grammar a bit easier.

I had ordered the student edition from Amazon, not realizing there was a teachers edition with a CD. I would like the CD in order to print out the worksheets. I did photo copy the first chapter; however, the CD will be a nice option to have and print out easier.

Is there any way to get the digital resources without using the CD? None of my computers have a cd player.
A shopper on Oct 30, 2022
BEST ANSWER: If you can find someone with a portable cd player, I just copied it to my google drive so I could access the content at home and my school computer.
What grade or age is this for?
tiffanie g on Jan 7, 2022
BEST ANSWER: This material is written by a high school teacher for high school students. I used it with my eighth grade ADD son who had a good grammar foundation but needed continual review of basic-to-advanced grammar topics. The material covers a great deal of grammar very quickly reading-wise and gives a lot of practice options. The quirky paragraph and sentence material was perfect for a boy who appreciates humor and might get bored otherwise.
Does this edition have the answers for the student edition?
A shopper on Mar 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The answers to the exercises in the student book are in the back of the student book. I never even used the CD, or looked at it. If I had known that the answers were in the back of the student book, I likely would not have bought the Teacher's Edition.
Is this just the teacher's guide? Or will I need to purchase this in addition to the book?
A shopper on Apr 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, this is everything you need. What I like is that you can have your student write his or her answers in a notebook or it comes with a CD you can use on your computer to print off the assignment as a worksheet. We've done it both ways with our daughter.

Used with my 6th graders
My students enjoyed the lessons. It ended up being good for my EL students since I had to explain the jokes to them. Sadly I didn’t see an improvement with retention of the subject, but we did have more fun during the lessons.

Errors in the Answer Key
I purchased the deluxe edition, copyright 2008. I've taught the first two chapters with my kids (13, 11, 9, 7). I enjoy the creativity in the book and the sentences certainly make us giggle. I appreciate the writing tips. My issue is that there are errors in the answer key. So far, I can recognize the errors and give the correct answers, but if you were to give the answer key for a student to check their own work, the teacher would need to check the answer key for errors first! In a "deluxe" edition, I would also appreciate more detailed explanations for the teacher the function of all the words in a sentence. For example, many words in English can be different parts of speech depending on the sentence. I'd like explanations for the sentences used in the exercises when a word is acting a pronoun rather than an adverb, etc. However, if the answer key were correct, I might not have as many doubts. E.g. Exercise 6, page 37, identify the adverbs: "When she jumps high hurdles, Aunt Myrtle never wears a girdle." The answer key only identifies "never" as an adverb modifying "wears." Isn't "When" also an adverb, modifying "jumps?" It isn't in the answer key, so I'm doubting myself and I don't have an alternate explanation. I love grammar, but I am admittedly rusty. I have multiple errors though, that is just one example.

Fun!
I'm reading this at snack time with my 7th grade girl and 4th grade boy. It's what it says it is, fun and easy to understand! The assignments are varied and not at all painful.

Giggly Guide
This is not black and white grammar, which is I guess the point. The lessons are brief, with relevant exercises. The text and pictures are funny. The CD has all the exercises which are nice. I wish it had the main content of the lesson summarized though. E.g. lists of different types of pronouns, prepositions, etc. It definitely approaches grammar with a different take.

Funny and thorough
As other reviewers noted, this is an excellent book that covers all the various aspects of English grammar. I've used it with my 11 year old daughter who has had difficulty using other programs. We both find it very funny and illed with easier to understand lessons. I tried letting her do it on her own for awhile as it seemed to be written so a student could understand it, but we realized there were too many little things she wasn't comprehending that way.

The one drawback for me is that it is definitely written for the sense of humor of a middle school student and has gross bodily jokes and crude references at times. Most of the time it doesn't bother me but there have been one or two that seemed a bit over the top for my sensibilities. That is why I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5 star.

Giggly Guide to Grammar is expertly named! I used this book when my son was in 8th grade as a last year review of Grammar We had used excellent Grammar courses before but it seemed there were only so many ways to make the parts of speech fun and exciting Then I found Giggly Grammar We laughed our way through a year of grammar Don't be fooled by the fun title and examples This is a superb grammar program! From the parts of speech to the different types of sentences and everything in between Giggly Guide to Grammar will meet and exceed your expectations to what a Grammar course can be It is simple to teach from It is easy enough for a beginning elementary student to learn for the very first time and it works equally well for a student that is finishing up formal grammar lessons
