Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

This came recommended from a friend of mine who is using it with her second grader. I have been using an online program that isn't working well for my daughter, as she needs more practice and enrichment than the program provides. Hopefully this will do the trick!

We are switching to Saxon because of the repetition of lessons. We want to build a strong math foundation for our children. They seem to forget lessons we thought we mastered. Hoping this is our answer!

I have loved Saxon 1 - it's "open and go". The program told me everything to have ready and what to say to explain a concept. My daughter stayed engaged. It can be repetitive so we only did 1 side of the worksheet along with the fact drill sheet each day. She caught on quickly to the concepts and this program reviews concept nicely. She loved the meeting book and weather graph.

Saxon has been such a blessing to our family. The script makes it so simple to teach any math concept, and the constant review of previously taught concepts is perfect for my little learner. It is rigorous, but in a good way! Saxon teaches number sense and critical thinking.

Where can I find a list of manipulative required for Saxon 2? I have a lot of manipulative and I don’t want duplicates!
Debbie on Oct 1, 2020
BEST ANSWER: This kit includes the basic required manipulatives for Saxon Math 2. There is a list included in the product description area.

Can someone explain oral assessments? I see no guidance as to how to do an oral assessment. Thank you
A shopper on Jul 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Guidance for oral assessments can be found on the Oral Assessment Recording Forms in some of the first pages of the student workbook. It lists materials needed for each oral assessment and gives guidance on what to ask the student.
Does this set contain flashcards? We are finishing up with Saxon Math 2, which includes flashcards for addition/subtraction and multiplication/division facts. Only the book ends with not learning all of the multiplication facts, so I'm wondering if the rest of the multiplication/division fact cards are included in this Saxon Math Intermediate 3 set.

BEST ANSWER: Saxon Math 3 Home Study Kit includes flashcards. I'm not sure about Saxon Math Intermediate 3.
My daughter just turned 7 and we are switching to Saxon math. She did Horizon's K last year because Horizon's 1 was overwhelming and frustrating her. We did the placement test and she was placed easily in Saxon 2. However, she has not memorized any math facts as of yet and she still struggles with time and money. I am wondering if Math 1 would be a better fit but a lot of the concepts listed she has already mastered. Will the things she has not learned/mastered be re-taught in Math 2 or would we be better off to go with Math 1? Thanks for your input!
A shopper on Aug 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Saxon 2 does review math facts, but a solid understanding of them would be helpful, in my opinion. Personally, I would do Saxon 1 and skip the lessons (or speed through) she is already strong at.
What is included in this kit?
A shopper on Oct 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You get the teacher's manual; fact cards for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; student worksheets and tests (in two booklets); and master pages for selected lessons. The master pages are needed to complete some of the lessons. There are also also pages for checklists and logs to keep track of the student's progress.

Math is now her favorite subject! Worth every penny.
We were previously using a different math curriculum and it was a fight each day to get her to do it because she was bored and thought it "too babyish" as there were so many pictures and graphics that she said distracted her. My daughter is 8 years old.

Day one, after opening the curriculum, she immediately tackled several worksheets and enjoyed her work. Then throughout the day asked, "Hey can I do some more of that new math?" and proceeded to do several more of her own accord.

My husband and I are thoroughly impressed with the Saxon curriculum and plan to use it in years to come. We've had it a little over a month now and my daughter is growing in her love of math each day. We can see she is grasping the concepts quickly and retaining them! Wow. Very grateful for this well designed program.

I love the straightforward no nonsense worksheets that look "grown up". So much child-centered curriculum is littered with LOTS of pictures, graphics, bright colors, and lots of "extras" on the page. I'm sure this is intended to keep a child's attention. If your child enjoys these "extras" as it were then Saxon is not the program for you. That being said, there are plenty of opportunities for learning math, making it interesting and holding attention through variety: manipulatives, making drawings of word problems, etc.

We are thoroughly impressed! Worth every penny!

We're thankful for Saxon Math!
We really like Saxon math. It is thorough and moves at an appropriate pace. Because of It's incremental approach, I feel like my child can have better mastery over the topics. I don't do the "morning meeting" every day, but I always do the main lesson from the teacher's guide and the recommended math sheets. It's nice how I can tailor it to my child's specific needs.

Very happy
I’m very glad I purchased Saxon Math 2. My son is thriving in it and I couldn’t ask for more. We went through Math Mammoth first and then Beast Academy. Although I really like those math curriculums, my son didn’t. He is the type of student who needs a lot of review and math concepts to be laid out and explained step by step. This is what Saxon Math does. It’s more work on my side, but I’ll put up with it so he can get better in math.

Very well done
I have heard that Saxon is rigorous and have been a little hesitant to switch but our math program last year wasn’t clicking for my kid so I made the decision to switch and am so happy. Saxon is very well organized and walks you thru each lesson step-by-step. So far we have been very pleased with Saxon! They really breakdown the concepts so they are easy to teach and understand. I also love the worksheets.
