Written in a comfortable style, All American History Volume II offers hundreds of pictures and dozens of maps. It is a complete year’s curriculum for grades 6-12 when used with the Student Activity Book and Teacher’s Guide (included with purchase as a digital download). The Student Reader provides 32 weekly lessons, and each lesson contains three sections examining:

* The atmosphere in which the event occurred

* The event itself

* The impact this event had on the future of America

Category Description for All American History:

If you are using an American history course that doesn't go much beyond who discovered what when; who fought who when, and where; who invented this, who built that, who wrote such and such a poem or novel; stop here for just a minute and let me tell you about a history course that will fill in all those blanks. Each volume is a full year of study in 32 weekly lessons aimed at 5th through 8th grade students. The hardcover student reader reads like a story, emphasizing the social and cul¬tural aspects of American history. The Companion Guide is the Student Activity Book, plus the Teacher’s Guide. The Student Activity Book can be accessed online with the code provided in the main text or Reader. It includes exercises, reviews, map work, and study questions. The comprehensive teacher guide contains teaching notes and directions for utilizing both the reader and activity book, answers to all the questions and reviews, games and activities, creative project ideas, timeline strategies, recommended reading lists, family fun activities, and more. The All American History Junior version adapts the lessons for students below 5th grade. It is an alternative age-appropriate teacher's guide with coloring pages, literature guides, puzzles, folder books and more.

The reader is not unlike a good story, using plain language, black and white illustrations, and maps to retell the history of America from the earliest explorers of America through to the beginning of the 19th century. Not missing any of the important information found in traditional history texts, students will be drawn into the exploration of history at a much deeper level and in a more diverse way. The author has emphasized the social and cultural aspects of American history to add extra life to the text. Students learn about the clothes people wore, the houses they lived in, the foods they ate, the games they played, the schools they attended and other interesting facts. All these details are so very important to the study of history, though overlooked at times by other history courses. The chapters are well laid out, and all follow the same basic formula. The opening provides a description of the atmosphere in which the events of the chapter occurred, followed by the body of the chapter in which the events are detailed and the stories told, and concluded with a list of ways the events had an impact on America's future.

The digital, downloadable Companion Guide (included with the Reader) is full of exercises, reviews, map work, and study questions. The digital, downloadable teacher's guide/answer key contains teaching notes and directions for utilizing both the reader and activity book, answers to all the questions and reviews, games and activities, creative project ideas, timeline strategies, recommended reading lists, family fun activities, and more. If you want, however, to take the study of American history more seriously and to a deeper level, the teacher's guide also has plenty of options for further study. In fact, while focused mainly on grades five through eight, the teacher's guide also contains suggestions for adapting this history course both for children younger than 5th grade and for high school students, using the course in a family setting, the co-op setting (which was originally how this course came into being), and the Christian school setting. Suffice it to say that this American history course, by Christian author and history teacher Celeste Rakes, is complete, thorough and adaptable to almost any setting a homeschooler would need.

Volume 1 covers early American exploration to the Jacksonian era in the early part of the 1800's. Continuing the story of America, Volume 2 picks up at the Civil War, with details of the prelude to the war through to the reconstruction period. From that point, the rest of American history is divided into three eras - the Gilded Age (also known as the Victorian Age), the period of the two world wars and the depression; and finally, the Cold War and the 21st Century.

Although this course was previously made up of three separate items, the new inclusion of the downloadable digital Companion Guide and Teacher's Guide into the Reader makes this course even more usable for families using it as a multi-grade history program!

BEST ANSWER: The actual texts are only available in print at this time.
Is the "Downloadable Companion Guide" the same thing as the "Activity Book"?
A shopper on Aug 6, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it is the same material. If you have an option, though, I would choose the traditional paper workbook.
What is the downloadable companion guide? Is it in place of the student activity book or the teacher guide/answer key?
Jennifer M on Jul 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The downloadable companion guide is the high school test packet. There are eight units of four chapters each and this contains all eight unit tests and answer keys. Each test is 65-100 questions, which are matching, true/ false, multiple choice, and map identification. If you're teaching high school students, this is one of the curriculum components that makes it high school level. Also tests like this help prepare students for the SAT, ACT, and college. This does not replace the student activity book or the teacher guide. I sent the link to my local copy/pack/ship store, and they made me a handy softcover book to use. I highly recommend using this download. Very good curriculum. Would be great for multi-age student group.
Does this work for high school credit?
Teresa on Apr 7, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I am using this for my 10th grade daughter. We are supplementing the weekly work with the "For Further Study" questions, various online resources such as videos and articles, and a variety of engaging projects. From what I can see, with the supplementation I am providing, this course is both more engaging and more rigorous than the history instruction she was receiving in public school.
is this sectarian?
A shopper on Feb 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I purchased vol. 2 only. It has very little Christian content.
Part of each chapter focuses on cultural influences and family life. Fundamentalist Christianity in the 1920's is addressed the same way as any other social influence. The Scopes trial was covered in a very neutral manner, in my opinion. There us no bias that I am aware of in terms of denomination. JFK's Catholicism was mentioned like any other historical fact. Pentacostals and the Jesus People are also mentioned in their appropriate time periods.
What are the book titles for extra reading for Vol.2?
A shopper on Feb 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I do not currently have the book in hand but there are really too many to mention. There is a generous list for all age levels to choose from to read for each unit but of course they are supplemental. These history books have much detail in them- that is why they are split into two volumes. I highly recommend these US History books!

PLEASE OFFER SEPARATE COMPANION GUIDES
I recently ordered All American History Vol. 2, for next year and about a month ago downloaded the companion guide. I would much more prefer to pay for the guide than to have to use up so much paper and ink on my own to download a copy. If the guides were offered in spiral bound format, it would be ideal.

Excellent textbook!
Lots of maps and pictures which helps the reader's imagination come alive. (not color) Well-written by someone who obviously loves and is well-educated in history. Can be enjoyed by kids about 10 to high school, high interest. Be sure to supplement with student activity book and teacher's edition. They were written to be used together, and I wouldn't recommend doing just one book.

This text is great to span across more than one student. I did buy the high school tests to help hold my older child who is in 8th grade accountable. Secondly, the content is not dry like some textbooks.
