In the case of this series, the sum is definitely more than the total of its parts. As the most important Latin and Greek roots are studied, students increase their vocabularies far more than the 240 words actually presented, since these roots form the basis for many additional words. Roots are grouped thematically in worktexts, with each of the sixteen lessons in every book introducing up to 15 words derived from two or more classical roots. Each lesson begins with a "root dictionary". The root and root forms are shown and defined in bold type, followed by English word(s) derived from that root. Each English word is shown in dictionary format with pronunciation key, definition(s) and word forms each followed by a sentence showing correct word usage in context. Small side boxes list additional words that are formed from the same root. A variety of exercises based on synonyms, antonyms, analogies, vocabularies in context, and sentence completion are provided at the end of lessons to insure mastery. The many literary, historical and geographical references are designed to increase the student's cultural literacy. After every two lessons, a creative or expository writing assignment is suggested, using words from the lessons , allowing the student to put into practice the words he's learned.

Answers are available in the answer key, but if you want a little more help, opt for the Teacher Key. The Teacher Key is a valuable resource, as it complements, extends, and enriches the series. It provides tips for individual learning needs and shows how to ensure that students are building upon earlier skills. It gives support for every lesson, provides blackline masters to reinforce key words, gives additional review activities and vocabulary games, and includes a glossary and answer key for the student books.

A test booklet (with answers) is available. You get a lot of educational value for your money here. This series would be beneficial to parents too - especially those that didn't attend parochial school or study the classical languages!

We have just started this curriculum (we were previously using Wordly Wise) and my kids and I really appreciate it. My kids were not liking the amount of writing with Worldy Wise, even though they were retaining the info from it, but love "Vocabulary from Classical Roots" because they can take in the information, understand it, and learn/retain new and complex vocabulary quickly without much writing/worksheet time involved.

I ordered the "A" set to start our school year, just to see how it went. Well, it went rather well so we have decided to continue with Vocabulary From Classical Roots. It's nice to see her making so many connections between her Latin studies and her vocabulary studies.

I wanted a vocabulary workbook that uses word roots. I think this is a better way to learn words. It seems a skill that could be useful in figuring out words.

Is the student book consumable or do you have the student write on a separate piece of paper?
A shopper on Aug 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The student book is consumable.
are the books sequential?
A shopper on Jan 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, in that the words get harder as you go higher (like from book A to book B to book C...). You can start further in with no problems in my opinion (especially for the older student) but will miss a lot of good, helpful words to learn and know. Personally, I bought three different levels for 3 of our kids and when I saw the good vocabulary words they were missing from not doing a lower level, I had them all start out one level lower than I had first planned.

Love it love it love it! This is the best I've seen for teaching vocabulary with Latin and Greek roots Your children will apply the lessons to their other studies as well

Finally a vocabulary program that my kids don't whip through with little effort! These are challenging and thought-provoking exercises with many vocabulary words students haven't already heard I must admit a few of the questions stumped me! This program isn't so difficult as to produce frustration but is difficult enough that a good student won't necessarily answer every question correctly every time This one's a winner!

Perfect! A serious study and not too difficult This series is very interesting These can by used by many grade levels and you can expand on the course for an older student Love This!
