In the case of this series, the sum is definitely more than the total of its parts. As the most important Latin and Greek roots are studied, students increase their vocabularies far more than the 240 words actually presented, since these roots form the basis for many additional words. Roots are grouped thematically in worktexts, with each of the sixteen lessons in every book introducing up to 15 words derived from two or more classical roots. Each lesson begins with a "root dictionary". The root and root forms are shown and defined in bold type, followed by English word(s) derived from that root. Each English word is shown in dictionary format with pronunciation key, definition(s) and word forms each followed by a sentence showing correct word usage in context. Small side boxes list additional words that are formed from the same root. A variety of exercises based on synonyms, antonyms, analogies, vocabularies in context, and sentence completion are provided at the end of lessons to insure mastery. The many literary, historical and geographical references are designed to increase the student's cultural literacy. After every two lessons, a creative or expository writing assignment is suggested, using words from the lessons , allowing the student to put into practice the words he's learned.

Answers are available in the Answer Key, but if you want a little more help, opt for the Teacher Key. The Teacher Key is a valuable resource, as it complements, extends, and enriches the series. It provides tips for individual learning needs and shows how to ensure that students are building upon earlier skills. It gives support for every lesson, provides blackline masters to reinforce key words, gives additional review activities and vocabulary games, and includes a glossary and answer key for the student books.

A Test Booklet (with answers) is available.

You get a lot of educational value for your money here. This series would be beneficial to parents too - especially those that didn't attend parochial school or study the classical languages!

Our family is transitioning from Latin to German for our language study. However, I wanted to continue to work on my kids' vocabulary and understanding of Latin derivatives and root words and saw this as a good option for that.

My high school teachers used these in my honors and AP English classes. They were incredibly useful! I want my children to benefit from them as well. The books are laid out quite nicely. They're challenging but not inaccessible. Perfect fit.

Ive used this for many years with ninth graders. With the pandemic, it's better to have each child with a copy in their possession instead of passing papers back and forth.

This is a great curriculum for an introduction to word roots. It does require some parental involvement with the introduction of new roots each week, but the Teacher's edition is pretty scripted, so you are not just on your own. I found that it was helpful to have my kids make index cards for the roots each week for easy review.

Is this meant to be used over an entire school year, or a semester?
Grete on May 3, 2021
BEST ANSWER: We used it over the course of a school year, which is how the publisher intended (as far as I know). The second book we took at a slower pace, mixing it with grammar and writing. I suggest having the child make flashcards to continually review. I hope this helps.
I'm going to use this book for my 7th grader. Do I need to purchase the teacher's guide and answer key as well?
A shopper on Sep 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The teachers guide gives some helpful ideas and suggestions, but, in my opinion, it is designed to be used more in a class room setting opposed to an individual homeschool environment. However, with that being said all of the answers to the exercises can be found at the very back of the Teachers book and not in the students book. The teachers book also has the Lesson Key Word Activity Master for each lesson of which you would need to make a copy to give to your student. This is not in the students text, and in my opinion it is more like a lesson review or quiz to be given to the student. The answers for the Lesson Key Word Activity Master are also in the Teachers text. It really comes down to do you want to have the answers or are you willing to search for them in your students text. For me the Teacher text was disappointing, I would have rather had an answer key opposed to a book that I for the most part did not use. Ultimately, I did use the book, but only for the answers, as that was a time saver for me. I would recommend the test booklet that goes along with this since it applies practical application and use of these vocabulary words.

Do words from books 4,5,6 repeat in these more advanced levels?
A shopper on Apr 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is surprisingly little duplication. For example, in Book A, there is one prefix from Book 6, six roots from Book 5, and none from Book 4.

Love this vobaulary program
I started using this curriculum based on the recommendation of The Well-Trained Mind guide. I like how it demonstrates to my children that defining words is so much easier when one knows the roots of the words.
It is relatively inexpensive, especially in the upper levels (A-E), because my older kids write their answers in a spiral notebook then pass the workbooks on to their younger siblings. I may let my youngest actually write in the book ;), although the writing activities will still need to be written on paper.
We begin level A in 7th grade after completing 4, 5, & 6 in 5th & 6th grades. Lessons become lengthier, so we move more slowly in A-E. My children could be completely independent in this program, but we grade their work together for more discussion & usage practice. Here's how we do it:

Day 1--make flashcards & begin exercises
Day 2-3--continue exercises (upper levels take at least 2 days to complete most of the time), study cards
Day 4--study cards and check exercises
Day 4--take test and check
I do not find it necessary to use the Teacher Guide

Great vocabulary program with a classical influence
This is a great vocabulary program that draws the student's attention to the classical roots of familiar and less familiar vocabulary words. The focus is on classical roots, not on learning Latin or Greek.
