Building Spelling Skills for Elementary Students

The Building Spelling Skills series is regarded as an excellent addition to spelling programs for elementary students. However, it can also work as either a stand-alone program or an addendum to your curriculum as you formulate the best homeschool spelling program for your family. These workbooks contain 30 week-long units, while the number of words per unit varies by grade. There are five to eight words per unit for Grade 1 and 18 words per unit by Grade 6. In addition to the 30 reproducible units, there is an answer key, sentences for dictation, and a variety of forms, such as blank crossword puzzles and spelling test forms.

Nearly all of the lessons are phonics-based or word pattern-based.

The units for Grade 1 and 2 focus on words with short and long vowels, blends, diagraphs, contractions, and variant vowels. The word lists also include plural nouns and past-tense verbs.

Lessons in Grade 3 and 4 emphasize words with blends, diagraphs, variant vowel sounds, silent letters, and contractions. They also provide practice for prefixes and suffixes and homophones.

Students in Grades 5, 6, and beyond have lessons on words with blends, variant vowels, prefixes, suffixes, contractions, and silent letters. In addition, they work on compound words, root words, commonly misspelled words, and irregular plural nouns.

Spelling Lessons

Each unit of these workbooks is divided into five lessons, one for each day of the school week. On Monday, students see the word list for the first time and then read and write out each word. The activities for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday use word study, dictation, and visual memory to improve retention. These might include filling in the blanks, completing the word, and finding rhyming words. Then on Friday, students complete a spelling test.

Building Spelling Skills is an excellent resource for many spelling applications. Whether you are a homeschooler, a mainstream educator, or a parent helping your child with a spelling bee, this series provides a good base for learning many of the most common English words.

This spelling series is perfect for spelling practice but is also comprehensive enough to use as a spelling program. Little teacher prep is required and each spelling list should only take 15-30 minutes to complete. Each book has 30 weekly spelling units and each unit consists of a spelling list, sentences for dictation that include the spelling words, and four reproducible student practice pages. The number of spelling words per unit varies by grade level; Gr. 1 has 5-8 words per unit for a total of 198 words, Gr. 4 has 18 spelling words in each unit for a total of 540 words, etc. Word lists were compiled from lists of commonly used words, commonly misspelled words, words with common phonetic or structural elements, and words changed by adding affixes and forming compound words or contractions. The 30 word lists for Gr. 1 are composed of words that all have the same short vowel sound or similar word endings (like "ill" and "ow") while the lists for Gr. 3 include words ending in "ing" and recognizing the "ur" sound in "heard" and "early."

Students review the word lists in a variety of ways throughout the week. On Monday the words are introduced and students read, copy, and write the words. The Tuesday worksheet is composed of visual memory activities like using the words to fill in boxes and crossing out misspelled words. The Wednesday worksheet quizzes on word meaning and dictation; students fill in blanks in sentences using the spelling words and repeat and write down sentences read by the teacher. The Thursday worksheet is composed of word study activities like underlining words with a long "a" sound, filling in missing letters of words, matching rhyming words, etc. The Friday worksheet is the final test for the spelling list and there are blanks for students to write out each word and also lines to redo the dictation done on Wednesday. The variety and amount of activities are designed to enhance memorization. Teacher ideas, spelling strategies, record keeping forms, answer keys, completion certificates, dictation sentences for teachers and more are also included. 160 pages each, reproducible w/ perforated pages.

Simple, enjoyable & effective
We home school and I wanted something to compliment my daughter's writing curriculum that didn't consist of a ridiculous amount of grammar rules to be memorized. This spelling book is perfect for her needs. She is already a good speller. This book has helped her maintain and grow in this area. I love that the lessons are simple. She completes two pages a day and goes through two lessons in a week. I felt like doing one lesson per week was too slow for her.

I really didn't want to have to copy every page of the book. I don't plan on reusing it. I wish the pages were not double-sided. Some of the word lists that you cut out are printed on the other side of pages that you will later use. How dumb is that? Also, these pages are not a normal 8x11 size. Because everything is double sided I end up having to copy some of the pages so I can keep each lesson together and organized. For organization and size purposes it would be so much better if everything was printed on it's own page, no double sides.

Otherwise, I do really love how simple and effective this is. I will be buying the next grade levels when needed.

I switched to this for my seven year old when he finished third grade spelling in a different program There isn't really a teacher book needed for the program as the first lessons outlines the reason for the words in the list The worksheets aren't just based on rote memorization of the current list of words but does have lessons on meaning antonyms opposites syllables prefix and suffix etc There is more to this book than just memorization of a select set of words There is also space for additional words to the list but they won't be included in the lessons I see us using this particular series throughout for our spelling needs
