Publisher Description:

This open-and-go teacher's guide makes it easy to use the best literature to teach the story of the United States. We have sifted through 150+ titles to choose the best books available so you and your students can dive into engaging stories accompanied by beautiful illustrations as you travel through time to meet Leif Erikson, Benjamin Banneker, Myles Standish, Harriet Tubman, Benjamin Franklin, Pocahontas, and dozens of others. This guide includes wonderful books, historical background, recipes, discussion topics, many supplemental book recommendations, website links, and much more. Students will learn about the people who shaped our nation's heritage beginning with the Indigenous Peoples who first settled the American continents and ending at the conclusion of the Civil War.

Learning history is most useful when it shows us what we can aspire to and what we ought to avoid or correct. When students complete this study, we hope that they will hold in honor those heroic individuals who sacrificed for the good of our country, that they will understand the basic foundations of civil and religious liberty unique to America's founding, and that they will be able to celebrate the rich mosaic of people who contributed to the founding and development of this nation.

An invaluable resource, this teacher guide takes out all the guesswork so that you can enjoy hours of reading great books together, learning about the formation of our country, and having valuable discussions that will help you connect with your kids.

  • This study contains 94 lessons.
  • Complete 2-3 lessons per week for a one-year study.

Two courses here, at different grade levels. Teaching a Providential view of America's story, and using a Literature approach, these guides break down the study into daily lesson plans, spanning the Vikings to the Civil War (1000 A.D. to 1865). Students keep notebooks of their work throughout the year. Lesson plans include various activities to correlate with the study as students "read" their way through history, consuming some of the best age-appropriate historical literature. Newly revised guides are expanded and now in full color. They also include web links, comprehension questions, character studies and more activities.

We love to learn through literature- this is s great fit for us, using good literature to read through history. We chose to use Beautiful Feet as our spine and this is the resource guide, I plan to use the library for the many books we will read, instead of buying all of them.

what books are required for this curriculum?
User on Aug 14, 2019
BEST ANSWER: First semester books include:
Leif the Lucky
Jamestown, New World Adventure
Pilgrim Stories
The Pilgrims of Plimoth
The Courage of Sarah Noble
The Matchlock Gun

Second semester books include:
Benjamin Franklin
A More Perfect Union
Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin
George Washington’s Breakfast
George Washington
Winter at Valley Forge
The Fourth of July Story
The Year of the Horseless Carriage 1801
Abraham Lincoln
Meet Abraham Lincoln
Buffalo Bill
Does this curriculum incorporate any hands on activities? Perhaps making something from the various time periods?
Danika M on Mar 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, but it “is designed to include a student composition notebook where all the student’s work including pictures, maps, reports, poetry, and copy work is recorded.” (From the guide’s “how to use this guide”). I have used The Story of the World (sold here on Rainbow Resource) for my children and the workbook includes many hands on activities.
I am going to use the Early American History Primary Study Guide from Beautiful Feet. I have all the books to go with the study guide. Are these CDs just those stories in audio form, or are they other stories? Thanks.

Your Story Hour H-1 to H-5 CDs
Your Story Hour H-1 to H-5 CDs
BEST ANSWER: Your Story Hour is a completely different set of stories. They cover the same topics that you read from the "living books" recommended, but they are not the same. Your Story Hour is a dramatized retelling of some parts of history. We used Early American History Primary, but we rarely did the Your Story Hour accompaniment because it has a strange way of fading in and out of "scenes". We could hear that they were still talking, but we couldn't understand what they were saying because it was fading out. This was very frustrating to my children, so we only did a few of the stories from it.

Ok guide... Definitely needs improvement
I love the book selection for this guide, however, the guide itself I didn't love. The reasons are the following: 1) the moral instruction laid out throughout the guide does not sit well with me. I love the Lord and its my number one goal to make Him known to my girls, however, I don't think that this is accomplished by simply teaching morals or Christian virtues, but a real relationship with Him happens through a real change of heart and personal experience with Him. I skip through some of the "moral" teachings, such as the memorizing of the conscience poem, and some of the questions and that seems to work fine for us. The guide ends up working for us just as a means to know how much reading to do each day, and we also utilize some of the suggestions given for website's to supplement the reading. 2) the second reason would be the fact that it doesn't not provide answers to the questions posed. 3) I wish some map work would also be available to print and download and more frequently talked about throughout lessons. I had to find my own maps to print off the internet and also had to find out by myself where the locations mentioned in the "Leif the Lucky" were in the map. I feels in regards to maps, there's a lot of figuring out by yourself what to do kind of thing. And honestly, that defeats the purpose of of having a guide in the first place. It's important to point out we are still in the beginning of the guide, as we just finished off lesson 12 I believe, which resumes the reading of Leif the Lucky, which is the first book.

Last spring my husband picked up the newly arrived Beautiful Feet homeschooling catalog and began reading it Why he decided to read it I have no idea other than the fact the catalog is about history his favorite subject After reading through the catalog we decided to order the Early American History Primary curriculum for our homeschool to utilize with our child for second to third grade Early American History Primary is authored by homeschooling mother and former teacher Rea Berg Early American History Primary is based on the teachings of British educator Charlotte Mason as described in Susan Schaeffer Macaulay's book "For the Children's Sake" The curriculum covers the time period from Leif the Lucky to the presidency of Abraham Lincoln "Living books" such as "The Courage of Sarah Noble George Washington's Breakfast D'Aulaire's Leif the Lucky Columbus Pocahahontas Benjamin Franklin George Washington Abraham Lincoln and Buffalo Bill" are the backbone of the curriculum Notebooking is incorporated into each lesson so at the end of the year your student will have a hand-made book of what they have studied Overall our family has been very pleased with Early American History Primary In the future we look forward to purchasing additional history curriculum from the Beautiful Feet Company

I discovered Beautiful Feet publishing quite by accident A friend of mine gave me her copy of "Early American History Primary" as she was no longer using it To say first and foremost I was surprised to see how the instructor's manual was organized in an easy to read format Secondly I was surprised to see how much content was to be covered "Early American History Primary" covers the time period in US history from the exploration of the Vikings to the war between the states with the Civil War "Living books" are the backbone of the curriculum Your child will be introduced to individuals in history such as the Pilgrims Leif the Lucky Benjamin Franklin Pocahontas and Abraham Lincoln Beautiful Feet publishing is an excellant resource for those who are utilizing the Charlotte Mason method of education in their homeschool

Though using the literature approach to teaching history sounded so good to us I was at a loss as to how to make that happen until I got this guide! Our boys delighted in every book we read Additionally their understanding of the time period and their recollection of what they learned is incredible! I chalk that all up to this guide After using this for one year we have been able to apply how the literature approach is done for other time periods As a new homeschooler the pace was just enough to keep me on track but not so much that I got overwhelmed or felt behind We look forward to using the Beautiful Feet curriculum as our children get older Highly recommended
