Not to leave out the eager younger children, this volume provides mini Five in a Row- style lessons for youngsters. This book; however, is divided into two parts, the first being similar to the other curriculum guides. Just as in the original series, each unit is built around a simple, classic children's storybook. This book differs from the older volumes in that it is not structured around a week. The purpose is simply to provide an array of activities for each book that engage children and lay the foundation for further learning. Some of the activities are subject related, such as Bible, science, math, language arts, and art; others are various skills such as learning shapes, sequencing, colors or problem solving, and the rest are centered on specific topics, like relationships, contentment, birthdays or another book-related idea. The second part of this book focuses on arming parents with creative ideas to build learning readiness. This section is a treasure trove of activities that help develop reading readiness and motor skills or focus on the arts. Additional activities also capitalize on teachable moments that arise during bath time, in the kitchen, or during a trip to the store. 149 pgs. ~ Steph
Before Five in a Row
Description
The Before Five in a Row and More Before Five in a Row curriculum guides use classic charming stories that are just right for preschoolers and kindergarteners to enjoy. The focus of these programs is to provide a happy introduction to books while establishing a foundation for academic readiness.
After a story is read and discussed, the guides provide lots of varied activities in different subject areas, including Bible, that correlate to each story. For example, after reading Caps For Sale, some tasks include learning about good posture, new vocabulary words like “bunch” and “cap”, the concept of counting, how to handle frustration, and noticing the detailed illustrations in the story. Lessons are not intended to be completed five days per week. Rather, they can be anywhere from once a week to several times per week.
Before Five in a Row for ages 2-4 has two parts – one with stories and activities and another with creative ideas for learning readiness, tasks to improve coordination, and more.
More Before Five in a Row for ages 3-5 is a guide filled with appealing, connection-building exercises after you read each story while also providing tips to promote early literacy skills. This guide also has a short Bible lesson for you and your child that correlates with each story.
