Category Description for Miquon Math Grade 2:

Math is not just numbers! Using Cuisenaire rods, Miquon Math Labs allows children to model numbers and operations concretely. It uses a hands-on, pattern-building, discovery method that fosters independence and creativity in problem solving. The unique format of the program allows for flexibility - use each book straight through, or teach topically. It introduces children to all four basic math operations in grade one - plus fractions, clock arithmetic, area, volume and factoring - building confidence in children and taking the "mystery" out of these otherwise-delayed topics. By third grade, children understand different base systems and graph algebraic equations! These are not typical workbooks that test what a child already has learned, but lab sheets - teaching pages. Children are shown that, while there is only one correct solution, there are different ways to arrive at it, and it encourages them to develop their own techniques. The "standard" approach is not always the best. For example, which is easier: 400 - 298 or 398 - 298 + 2 or 400 - 300 + 2? Techniques like these really help when caught without pencil or paper! After using Miquon with four children, we can attest that this program has promoted flexibility in problem solving - using the right technique for the situation. Ours now tackle new or difficult problems creatively, even fearlessly!

I would also recommend purchase of the Annotations. A teacher's guide for all six workbooks, it contains a general overview and several suggestions on how to present each major concept. It also provides preliminary activities for a concrete understanding of the math concepts as well as more detailed explanations for many of the lab sheets. While answers are supplied for some of the more "tricky" sheets, most worksheets are shown sans answers, so take the time to fill in the answers as you correct work for your first "math labs" student - then you'll have a completed key to use with the next!

Category Description for Miquon Math Labs:

Math is not just numbers! Using Cuisenaire rods, Miquon Math Labs allows children to model numbers and operations concretely. It uses a hands-on, pattern-building, discovery method that fosters independence and creativity in problem solving. The unique page-numbering format of the program allows for flexibility - use each book straight through, covering a variety of topics, or use only the pages in each book relating to a specific topic (easily identified by the alpha-numeric page numbering system).

Instead of holding off on more difficult math topics until later grades, the Miquon approach is unique in teaching all four basic math operations in Grade 1 - plus fractions, clock arithmetic, area, volume and factoring. This builds confidence in children as they see how the basic operations are intterrelated and takes the "mystery" out of these otherwise-delayed topics. By Grade 3, children understand different base systems and graph algebraic equations!

These are not typical workbooks that test what a child already has learned, but lab sheets - teaching pages. Children are shown that, while there is only one correct solution, there are different ways to arrive at it, and it encourages them to develop their own techniques. The "standard" approach is not always the best. For example, which is easier, to teach borrowing and carrying for a problem like 400 - 298 or to teach the the child to restate the problem as 398 - 298 + 2 or 400 - 300 + 2? Techniques like these really help to develop mental dexterity in problme solving. After using Miquon with our seven children, we can attest that this program has promoted flexibility in problem solving and teaches them to find the best technique for the situation. Ours students now tackle new or difficult problems creatively, even fearlessly!

Altogether, the six student workbooks contain over 650 lab sheets. Concepts covered include: counting, odd-even, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, equalities, place value, number line and functions, factoring, squaring, simultaneous equations, graphing equations, geometric recognition, length, area, volume, series and progressions, grid and arrow games, mapping, clock arithmetic, sets, and word problems.

We recommend purchasing the Lab Sheet Annotations. This is the teacher's guide for all six workbooks. Because the approach taken in the program is so different, it explains the reasoning behind the presentation and provides several suggestions on how to present each topic. It also provides preliminary activities for a concrete understanding of the math concepts as well as more detailed explanations for many of the workbook pages. While answers are supplied for some of the more "tricky" sheets, most worksheets are shown sans answers, so take the time to fill in the answers as you correct work for your first Miquon student - then you'll have a completed key to use with the next!

The Miquon Math program would be an excellent start in math to move into any other program, but it would lend itself particularly well to those intending to use the Singapore approach to math in the future.

I have done this math curriculum with three of my children, and my 4th is now doing it. It uses rods which we also use. My kids love math and I think this has helped them make a positive connection with math.

My daughters best and favorite teacher recommended this book. We love it!

I am teaching math rescue to older kids. They have not learned with the traditional school methods of teaching and need a fresh approach. Miquon Math adds colour/number identity on top of the unit/rod approach. Miquon also takes unit/rod beyond simply the base ten counting system. My daughter was dyslexic and she had great success with Miquon.
Jane Reagh B on Oct 19, 2020
Hear it was a great supplement to singapore math.

My favorite Math curriculum for young students. Purchased this for my 5th child as all my older children have thrived with this program.
Rhonda A on Jun 29, 2018
Love Miquon Math! I think this is a highly underutilized Math curriculum! I'll admit that when using it with my first I didn't totally understand or "trust" it, but with my second it all clicked and I appreciate the great math foundation it has given him (he is just about to finish the last book!) -- particularly as it encourages him to think and play and figure stuff out on his own! Getting another copy for my daughter and looking forward to using it with her!

I love these books as a supplement to curricula that is heavy in drill work. The drill work is absolutely necessary but these books encourage children to exercise their critical thinking skills in mathematics.

Jammi G on Sep 20, 2017
These books appeal to children who tend to be visual and kinesthetic learners. My child likes solving problems using the rods. <br />I also love the opportunity for the student to apply open ended math thinking.

It takes the children very quickly through the basic math operations. Miquon teaches how to figure out the answers instead of just memorizing facts.

My child is now incoming third grader. Can I still use Miquon for him? He is good at math & logic for his age but I would like to strengthen it some more. Should I start with the blue book or go all the way back to the orange book?
Sarah Jayne on Jun 25, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Miquon math does go up to 3rd grade. I think it would depend on your child's skill level. We liked Miquon in the beginning, we started with the first book (orange I think). I feel like it is one of the curriculums where you have to start from the beginning. Although the first book would be really easy for a 3rd grade with 2nd to 3rd grade level math skills. I don't like that it is a typical of circular curriculum (at least that is how I feel). Also, I do not like the LAB book very much.
Do any of the books have an answer key?
A shopper on Jan 3, 2020
BEST ANSWER: no you need to buy an answer key that has answers for all the books and some helps, but you mau not need answers in the early books
What do you use after Miquon Math (4th grade+)?

BEST ANSWER: Here are several to consider. ShillerMath (a Montesorri program) continues in a strong hands on/exploratory approach to math. Beast Academy couples strong concept development and instruction with graphic novel type of illustrations. Finally, Saxon Math is a solid math option with lots of review and repetition. Manipulative options are available for Saxon Math Intermediate 3, 4, and 5. There are placement tests available on our website - search for "math placement tests".

simple and effective
I am so glad I found Miquon. These books are challenging and fun. I love how open-ended it can be so make way for my students' brains to think of different ways to solve a problem. I appreciate that it is teaching them math and problem solving skills simultaneously. My boys love it!

Great for non-reader
I love the Miquon Math series for my child who struggles with reading. The pages are simple with very little text. The math builds in a logical way, but we can also skip around in the book some to keep it interesting for her. The program works on teaching fractions and multiplication right along side adding and subtracting right from the start, which has been great for us.
