Category Description for Horizons Curriculum:

Alpha Omega Horizons is a Bible-based, fast-paced, spiral approach to learning introduction, review, reinforcement. This works well for students who catch on quickly, with constant review that keeps concepts fresh. These are teacher-led courses with colorful student workbooks and thorough teacher manuals. This curriculum offers two courses at the preschool level Preschool for Three's and Horizons Preschool, something not offered in other AOP curriculum lines. These two levels lay a solid foundation for future elementary levels. Although not available for as many subject areas as LIFEPAC or SOS, Horizons is comprehensive in the subjects that are offered. Math is available for K-8, Phonics & Reading for K-3, Spelling & Vocabulary for 1-3, Penmanship for 1-5, Health for K-8, and Physical Education for PK-12.

Alpha Omega Horizons now offers complete curriculum sets for kindergarten through 3rd grade. At the kindergarten level, the set includes Horizons Health, Horizons Phonics & Reading, and Horizons Math. First through third grades sets include Horizons Math, Horizons Health, Horizons Phonics & Reading, Horizons Spelling & Vocabulary, and Horizons Penmanship. These sets include all of the required books for each subject both student and teacher.

Category Description for Alpha Omega Mathematics:
A complete, Christian math curriculum that emphasizes skill mastery. Each Complete Boxed Set contains ten LIFEPACs and a teacher guide. The only exception is the Grade K Boxed Set, which contains two student books and a teacher guide. Review and self-tests are built into the curriculum. LIFEPACs are thin, consumable student work texts. They are colorful in the elementary grades, but become less colorful as the grade level increases. Each set of ten LIFEPACs provides a year-long curriculum.

The spiral-bound teacher's guide contains a curriculum overview, teacher's notes, answer keys, and suggested guidelines (for scheduling, grading, study methods, etc). Daily lesson plans are not included. Teacher guides for grades K-1 provide more detailed teaching instruction than guides for grades 2-12. Why? Because the LIFEPAC curriculum facilitates the independent study approach. Starting in second grade, written instruction is included in each LIFEPAC so that the lessons are largely self-instructional. The teacher's responsibilities include introducing each LIFEPAC, setting a schedule, completing teacher checks, being available for student questions, administering and grading tests, and developing additional learning activities.

You might be wondering, "What's the difference between this curriculum and Horizons Math?" After all, both programs come from the same publisher and follow a similar scope and sequence up to the sixth grade. The main difference, in my opinion, is that Horizons is not self-instructional (written instruction is not included in workbooks). Another difference is that LIFEPACs offer standard practice problems whereas Horizons offers a greater variety of problems (mazes, coloring, decoding, etc) as well as standard drill, but LIFEPACs provide many more problems per workbook page. ~ Anh

Category Description for Horizons Math:

Admittedly, no math program will work for everyone - but I find few flaws in this motivating and well-laid out program. Although it may be more advanced for grade level than the "average" program, I don't consider that a negative. Because of the developmental approach to learning in this program, even a non-math type can easily succeed, while the "math whiz" will be challenged by the advanced topics introduced early. Concepts are introduced incrementally, then practiced, developed, and continually reviewed as other concepts are introduced. Pertinent Biblical concepts reinforce the math lessons, also. I found these to be interesting and appropriate to the material, not "forced" as mere add-ons. Horizons lays a solid foundation for numerical literacy with an early emphasis on hands-on, concept learning via manipulatives and one-on-one lessons. The program relies on few separately purchased manipulatives by utilizing common household items and including charts and number lines found in the teacher's handbooks. A useful table in the handbook shows the integration of manipulatives in lessons so you can tell at a glance just what you'll need. Analytical reasoning and mental acumen are stressed throughout the series, and memorization and drill are not neglected. The teacher handbook is the heart of the program, containing daily lesson plans that are easy to implement. Reduced student pages are a tremendous aid in planning and supply answers to the worktext exercises. Besides plans, the handbook contains an overview, materials list, activities, and supplemental worksheets (approx. one for each 4 lessons). Designed for homeschoolers, the activities, language, and lessons require no alteration. There are 160 lessons per level, each requiring approximately 20-30 minutes per day. Tests are given after every 10 lessons to assess retention of cumulative skills. While a good part of each lesson is oral (especially at the K level), the enticing, colorful student worksheets lay foundations for lessons and review concepts previously taught. There are two workbooks per grade level. Please note that the actual lesson is to be taught by you - there are only brief instructions on each page of the workbooks, which are not intended to be self- instructional. Boxed set contains teacher book and 2 student workbooks.Additional Student Worksheet Packets contain one photocopy of each reproducible master in the teacher book.

SOS curriculum is available for grades 3 through 12 in all subject areas and now comes in a USB flash drive format (Windows compatibility only). This option works well for the independent learner. The third option from AOP is Horizons. Horizons is available for grades PK through 12, depending on the subject matter. Horizons curriculum is only available for early learning, math, phonics/reading, spelling/vocabulary, penmanship, health, and physical education. This is a teacher-led option. I've used Horizons for K and 1 with my daughter, and it gives just enough structured learning, that we like using it. It is also colorful and interesting which helps keep her attention. I"ll probably switch to Teaching Textbooks after this, but wanted 1 more year of working on her writing numbers skills.

We have loved Horizons math for years. Our twins went from level one through level six. It was the first curriculum for elementary math we thought of for a little one joining us this year. It's easily portable, the pages are interesting and inviting, the explanations are straightforward, and it cycles back through each concept so nothing is forgotten.

I was given the workbook 1 to check out for our first year of homeschooling from a fellow homeschooler. My daughter picked it up so easily. She was in kindergarten but did the 1st grade set. The spiral learning method has worked out great for us and we will continue with this curriculum. It is very colorful and easy to understand.

Horizons Math is easy to teach, fun for my kids to look at, and constantly reinforces what they're learning by giving them opportunities to practice problems again. I've used it for years, with many of my children, and believe it's one of the best out there!

Horizons Math is a solid program. There is some repetition-which is good for kids who need it. If your child doesn't, it may be boring. My students love the colorful pages, and I appreciate the tear out sheets.

Do you need the teacher guide? We used the grade 1 and we never even cracked open the book
A shopper on Feb 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We didn't use the teacher's guide. We really used this book as more of a math practice workbook (rather than a curriculum with lessons taught by mom). I would just sit down with my son and go over the page for the day to make sure he understood it all and then let him do it. I would pull out manipulatives as I saw fit or explain concepts as needed, but I didn't use the teacher's guide or teach any math lessons. Plus, the math at this level is still simple enough that you can figure it in your head and don't need an answer key.

Great Math Book for Second Graders
We like the Second Grade Math book. I feel like it was an easy transition for my son coming from the First Grade Math Book. He rarely has any questions about his work but when he does after I show him the first time, he usually grasps the concept.

After struggling through our first 6 months of homeschooling with frustrating online math (Common Core with no explanations!) and Saxon Math (not quite fast-paced enough), we finally turned to Horizons. Not only are we making progress, there have been many days when DD has said "I'm going to go ahead and do an extra lesson." What?! We really love the look and the format. The Teacher's Guide is actually helpful and the manipulatives are actually helpful and can be used for more than just one year. My only problem with it is that it stops at around 6th or 7th grade with Algebra. Fingers crossed that they will continue this series!

AOP math
My son loves Horizons colorful prints. I like that they don't bore the kids with repetition. It teaches, you have problems and move on. It doesn't completely move on though. The problems keep popping in here and there.

Horizons Math helps my young ones to understand basic math, even though their foundations were poorly set in the past. Each concept is carefully taught, reviewed often, and this is done in a way that is interesting and fun. The books are colorful, and the work does not advance too fast for little ones, nor does it drag. These work for child after child, and I have used them for 6 children so far with no issues. I have not needed to find a different method for any of them!

My kids love Horizons!
Not only do my kids love it, but I love Horizons Math as well! We've been using it for several years now. It's colorful and keeps the kids interested. There's not so much work that they get bored but just enough repetition to make sure they learn each new process. This is typically advanced over public school math, so if your student is coming from public school you may want to test him to see his level before purchasing.

After starting to home school this last January the "approved" curriculum list was overwhelming I did my best and HATED the books they "recommended" So I read some reviews and settled on this book in both the 2nd grade and 6th grade version We LOVE LOVE LOVE them! Well worth the money and the instructions for the kids are easy to understand and they teach with color pictures If you have a student that learns well by reading a concept then given examples to solve the problem before being set free to solve on their own this series is very highly recommended

Horizons is a great math program It is interesting and colorful It includes plenty of drill and some mental math It is affordable and great for fast learners However because I don't like rushing my children along there is a very simple fix to make Horizons work without stressing the child out I just use it one half grade level lower For example my 2nd grader is using grade 2-book 1 the second half of the year In 3rd grade she will use 2-book 2 and 3-book 1 In this way the program is more developmentally appropriate while being on par for standardized testing and still moving quickly enough to be interesting and challenging
