Math Placement Tests

Saxon Math Placement Tests

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

Horizons Math Placement Tests

Admittedly, no math program will work for everyone - but I find few flaws in this motivating and well-laid out program. Because of the developmental approach to learning in this program, even a non-math type can easily succeed, while the "math whiz" will be challenged by the advanced topics introduced early. Concepts are introduced incrementally, then practiced, developed, and continually reviewed as other concepts are introduced. Pertinent Biblical concepts reinforce the math lessons, also. I found these to be interesting and appropriate to the material, not "forced" as mere add-ons. Horizons lays a solid foundation for numerical literacy with an early emphasis on hands-on, concept learning via manipulatives and one-on-one lessons.

Math-U-See Placement Tests

Each level offers DVD instruction for the parent/teacher and student, manipulatives (through Geometry level), and worksheets for mastery of math concepts evidenced by the students ability to teach the parent the concept by the end of the lesson. Because Math-U-See (MUS) is mastery-based, students may enter the program at any level depending on their concept proficiency. The authors have chosen to use the Greek alphabet to demonstrate the sequence of concepts taught rather than a grade level. It is highly recommended that all students (unless beginning with Primer) take a placement test to ensure mastery of any previously taught concepts. Placement tests are available at rainbowresource.mathusee.com.

Primary Math Placement Tests

Primary Math uses the Singapore methodology (based on Singapore’s Ministry of Education Syllabus) that employs a concrete-to-pictorial-to-abstract approach to teaching. Primary Math is available in several different editions, all published by Marshall Cavendish Education. Primary Math U.S. Edition is an adaptation of the 3rd edition for use in the U.S. Primary MathStandards Edition was adapted to meet the pre-Common Core CA math standards. An additional amount of content was added, but it is similar to the U.S. Edition. Primary Math CC (Common Core) is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and is another adaptation of the 3rd edition. Only minor changes were made to the scope and sequence. These placement tests for Levels 1-5 will work for any of these three Primary Math editions.

Primary Math 2022 Placement Tests

The newest edition of Primary Math, Primary Math 2022 for Grades K-5 retains the Singapore Math approach of concrete to pictorial to abstract with a few differences in components from previous editions. Student components include a consumable Student Book, an Additional Practice Workbook, and a Mastery & Beyond workbook. Teacher resources include digital content and parents can choose between a Home Instructor Guide, written for one-on-one interaction, and a Teacher Guide which has more small-group activities. Lessons have specific parts which reflect this process: LearnLearn Together, and Practice on Your OwnThese placement tests are specific to this edition and the answers are at the end of the document.

Math in Focus Placement Tests

Math in Focus is the newest U.S. edition of the widely-used Singapore math program. Two key ways that the Singapore approach differs from more traditional programs are: consistent use of models that allow students to tackle concepts that are normally delayed until later grades; and an emphasis on application of math skills to real-world situations helps children become formidable problem solvers in real life.

LIFEPAC Math Placement Tests

A complete, Christian math curriculum that emphasizes skill mastery. Each Complete Boxed Set contains ten LIFEPACs and a teacher guide. The only exception is the Grade K Boxed Set, which contains two student books and a teacher guide. LIFEPACs only (no teacher guide) are also available, for use with multiple students. Review and self-tests are built into the curriculum. LIFEPACs are thin, consumable student work texts. They are colorful in the elementary grades, but become less colorful as the grade level increases. Each set of ten LIFEPACs provides a year-long curriculum.

RightStart Mathematics Placement Test

Based on research comparing the differences between Japanese first grades and first grade classrooms in the U.S., this curriculum incorporates certain aspects from Asian math programs such as non-counting strategies and, for us, an alternative number naming system. In this program, the student is taught to see quantities in groups of fives and tens. When asked to add 9 + 7, instead of counting 7 up from 9, you would take 1 from 7 to make 10 and 6. This program also uses a unique number naming system. Asian words for numbers greater than 10 implicitly give you a feel for the base ten system. Literally translated, eleven is "ten-one," twelve is "ten-two," and so on. RightStart students learn to count the "math-way" before they are taught the less intuitive words for 11 to 19.

Math Mammoth Placement Tests

Taken as a whole, the curriculum follows a standard scope for elementary level work. Besides learning standard math operations, students learn money, time, measurement, fractions, number theory, place value, geometry, percents, decimals, ratios, proportions, graphing, probability, statistics, and using the calculator. The sequence is a little different in places, but makes sense and is only a factor if you are moving into or out of the curriculum.

Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Mathematics Placement Tests

Offering a systematic presentation of skills, Apologia’s new math program provides a creation based, hands-on approach to math education. Lessons are presented in a 4-step progression: Project and/or problem, pictorial presentation, abstract presentation, and application. Manipulatives, activities and projects are integral to success in the Exploring Creation with Mathematics series.

Beast Academy Placement Tests

The Art of Problem Solving folks present: Beast Academy. Proving that any monster can do math, these comically monstrous beasts take you along with them as they face math challenges both inside and outside the Academy. Described as "rigorous, challenging, engaging, and fun" by the publisher, I would expect nothing less from a curriculum designed to ready your child for the demands of MATHCOUNTS and post-elementary AOPS curricula.

New Elementary Math Placement Tests

Don't let the title of this series fool you. "Elementary" refers to "the basics," as in the basics of higher-level mathematics. New Elementary Math (NEM) 12, and 3 respectively cover introductory, intermediate, and advanced algebra and geometry. NEM 4 introduces advanced mathematics and ends with a major cumulative review.

Level 1 is 7th grade, 2 is 8th grade, 3 is 9th grade, and 4 is 10th grade. 7th and 8th grade programs each require one course book and one teacher's guide (NEM 1NEM 2). The 9th grade program requires two course books and two teacher's guides (NEM 3A & 3B), and the 10th grade program requires two course books but only one teacher's guide (for NEM 4A). One supplementary workbook containing extra practice problems is available for each grade.

Art of Problem Solving Placement Tests

This is an outstanding math program for the math-gifted student. It is rigorous and oriented to the independent problem-solver. The texts are based on the premise that students learn math best by solving problems -- lots of problems -- and preferably difficult problems that they don't already know how to solve.
