Lightning Literature & Composition

Description

Lightning Literature and Composition is a popular literature-based homeschool language arts curriculum for grades 1–12 that combines high-quality children’s and classic literature with systematic grammar, literary analysis, and step-by-step writing instruction. Designed for homeschool families, it helps students develop a genuine love of great books while building strong reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills.

The program is divided into three main stages: Elementary, Middle School, and High School. These stages allow students to grow naturally with progressively deeper literary analysis and more advanced composition work.

Elementary School (Grades 1–6):

In the early grades, Lightning Literature gently introduces literature appreciation through children’s books such as Winnie-the-Pooh, Aesop’s Fables, and poetry collections. Students enjoy daily literature discussions while receiving systematic instruction in grammar, mechanics, and beginning composition. Diagramming starts in Grade 2 and literary analysis begins in Grade 3.

Middle School (Grades 7–8):

The middle school levels (Storm and Tempest) offer a smooth transition with richer literature selections and increased focus on literary elements, vocabulary, critical thinking, and structured writing. These flexible courses work well for 7th and 8th grade or as a gentler high school introduction.

High School (Grades 9–12):

At the high school level, students choose from twelve semester-long courses arranged by difficulty. Most begin with American Literature. The program emphasizes quality literary analysis, advanced composition, and thoughtful discussion of classic and diverse works while preparing students for college-level reading and writing.

Curriculum Highlights:
